1 & 2 Peter Class Schedule

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. 3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you beloved - from agapaō, "to love”- divinely-loved ones, spoken only of Christians as united with God and of Christ by the Father see 1 Peter 2:11, 1 Peter 4:12, 2 Peter 1:17, 2 Peter 3:1,8,14,15,17 in which I am stirring up your sincere mind in which - lit: in both of which stirring up – when used of the mind, to excite, incite, stir up – see 2 Peter 1:13

1 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, in which I am stirring up your sincere mind sincere - in the NT it is used of moral and ethical purity; literally means “judged by sunlight” see Phil. 1:10 mind - lit. a thinking through, or over, a meditation by way of reminder What are some other verses directed to our minds ? see Col 3:2, Rom 12:2, 1 Peter 1:13

2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles. that you should remember ( to be mindful, recollect ) see 1 Cor 11:2, 2 Tim 1:4, Jude 1:17 the words spoken beforehand (of these sayings, foretold) by the holy prophets – Luke 1:70, Acts 3:21 the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles “Again Peter put the teaching of the apostles, which these men received from Jesus Christ, on a level of authority equal with the writings of the Old Testament prophets.” - Constable What is meant by “the commandment”?

3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, Know this first of all (lit: of first priority) see 2 Peter 1:20 that in the last days (see 2 Tim. 3:1-5; 1 John 2:18-19) When are the last days? the days from Christ’s first coming until His second coming mockers will come with their mocking mockers – from the word to deride, mock - a scoffer, spoken of impostors, false prophets - see Jude 1:18

3b,4 following after their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." The mockers are doing two things a. following after their own lusts – see 2 Peter 2:10 b. and saying “Where is the promise of His coming”? coming – parousia - denotes both an "arrival" and a consequent "presence with” – James 5:7-8, 1 Thess 2:19 the scoffers (mockers) denied the promise of the Lord Jesus that He would return – Constable see John 14:1-3, 18, 28 ; Acts 1:11 ; Matt 16:27

4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." This is the mockers argument For ever since the fathers fell asleep, See Acts 3:13, Acts 5:30, Heb 1:1 What does “fell asleep” imply? The "fathers" are probably physical forefathers, more likely the Old Testament patriarchs rather than the first generation of Christians (Stephen, James). - Constable all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation continues - to continue throughout, i.e., without interruption But these mockers maintain that nothing has changed since the world began, and that everything has just continued as it was, implying that there never has been any miraculous intervention by God in the world. - Vern

5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice For concerning this they willfully forget that (Wuest) What is “this” in this verse? that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago 5b that the heavens [came into] existence long ago by the word of God, - see Heb 11:3 Note this all happened by the word of God See Gen 1:1-3

5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. and the earth also which was formed out of water and by means of water – see Gen 1:6-8 God spoke again and the dry land separated from ("out of") the waters (Gen. 1:9-10). Thus God used water to form the dry land. – Constable through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. destroyed – perished this is described in Gen 7:11-12 & 21

7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. but - de – points to an additional work that God is doing by His word – lit: by the same word - see verse 5 the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire reserved - to lay up, store up – see 1 Cor. 16:2 “fire” is used in both the old and new testament for judgment see Isa 66:15, Dan 7:9-10, Mic 1:4, Mal 4:1, Matt 3:11-12, 2 Thess 1:7-8 The world is presently "reserved" for fire in the sense that this is its inevitable destiny (cf. Deut. 32:22; Isa. 34:4 LXX; 66:15-16; Zeph. 1:18; Mal. 3:19). - Hiebert

7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men kept – lit: being kept (present tense) - to watch over, preserve, keep, watch - see John 17:11-12,1 Thess 5:23 Peter used this same word earlier in 2 Peter 2:4,9 and 17 notice this judgment is of the ungodly! the term “day of judgment” is used in Matt 10:15 In the NT, destruction (apóleia) refers to the state after death wherein exclusion from salvation is a realized fact, wherein man, instead of becoming what he might have been, is lost and ruined. Zodhiates see Mat 7:13, Phil 1:28, Phil 3:18-19, Rev 17:8
