African-American Inventors

invented: made something new George Alcorn invented ways to detect life on other planets. Way to go, big man!

design: a plan for how something should be made Benjamin Bannaker had a design for a wooden watch. It was one of the first watches made in the U.S.A. Hey Benji! You should figure out a way to put me on your wrist! Hey! That’s a great idea…

products: things made by people or machines George Carver made over 300 products from only peanuts! He also used soybeans, pecans, and sweet potatoes. He invented or improved such things as: glue, buttermilk, shaving cream, and pavement. Cool, man! Peanut, this is the start of a beautiful friendship!

powerful: very strong Sarah Goode was a very powerful thinker. She designed a cabinet that folded into a bed! She was also the first African-American woman to have a patent.

instrument: a tool or machine made for a purpose- not just music Elijah McCoy invented an instrument that helped keep train engines oiled. Hmm… How could I keep it oiled?

allowed: let something happen Valerie Thomas invented an illusion transmitter which allowed you to see a 3-D image of something. You can see all around the image, not just what is facing you. In the future we might have them instead of televisions! It would sort of be like this scene from Star Wars.
