The First President The Constitution set up a system for electing the President. Each state chose representatives for a group called the Electoral College. In 1789, the members of the Electoral College elected George Washington as our first President.

Inauguration George Washington knew that he had to set a good example for others to follow. In 1789, during his inauguration, he promised to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Since then, every President has made the same promise.

Different Points of View Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton argued about the role of the government. Hamilton wanted a strong national government that supported trade and manufacturing. Jefferson said the government should be limited and support farming instead of trading.

Political Parties Jefferson and Hamilton both had followers who formed political parties. People supporting Jefferson formed the Democratic-Republican party. People supporting Hamilton were known as the Federalist party.

Federalist Party VS Democratic- Republican Party Hamilton and Jefferson often gave the President opposite advice. Hamilton wanted to start a national bank. He believed that it would make the nation wealthier and stronger.

Federalist Party VS Democratic- Republican Party Jefferson said the government did not have the power to create the bank. Washington took Hamilton’s advice and approved the law that created a national bank. It would control all of the money of the United States.

Money in the Bank How would the bank get the money ? People would begin saving money and put it into a savings account. The bank would borrow from the savings account and pay people interest for using their money. The people would borrow money from the bank and pay interest to borrow it.

New Capital A Capital is a city where the government meets. Hamilton and Jefferson agreed to locate the new nation’s capital between Virginia and Maryland. President Washington chose the exact location and it was named Washington D.C.
