News from Oct. RRB o The process followed by CMS to establish the phase 2 scope and cost estimate in a Technical Proposal by end of 2014 was discussed in details and well received o We are however expected to report on the progress at the Oct. RRB – This involves writing a document describing development of the scope for phase 2, including Motivation and advantage in physics performance Cost scale Size of effort / resources needed Impact on shutdown plan/duration – This will be a relatively brief document, not an LoI, it anticipates the schedule of our studies targeting decision on scope early next year – The timescale for the document is presentation to the collaboration at the end of July (MB/FB) then CWR and approval by CB during Sept. week in Taipei. We need to define baseline scenarios (2?) and options during the DESY week converging on the following questions: – Detectors that need replacement (when - staging?) – Inter-relationship between tracker-trigger-calorimeter electronics upgrades – Requirements on granularity and resolution for calorimetry – Motivation of options: extended coverage in tracking, calorimetry, muon systems – Motivation of options: high precision timing – Eliminating unrealistic scenarios with respect to criteria outlined above o We are preparing a framework for preparing the document, with the cost exercise 2
HL-LHC Pile-up for simulation o Common CMS and Atlas note in preparation, first draft released – Summary of elastic/inelastic/total cross section measurements 81±3 mb at 14TeV – Nominal HL-LHC parameters 2808 bunches (could be 2760) Hz/cm 2 constant – Bunch luminosity fluctuation from current beams 8% RMS Including uncertainties expect PU of 115 to 140 Proposal to simulate at conservative value of 140 to harmonize with ATLAS (agree at XEB) – investigate performance degradation at PU 200 ( Hz/cm 2 ) 3
Upcoming events o Upgrade week at DESY Monday-Friday June – Finalizing agenda and set of topics to be addressed Need to define list of presentations and name of speakers – Do not forget to register – Do not forget Poster session conferences/conferences/conf_display.aspx?cid= conferences/conferences/conf_display.aspx?cid=1160 o ECFA workshop Oct. 1 – 3 – Preparatory group with 4 experiments being formed CMS contributors: Physics goals and reach: C. Hill, M. Klute, I. Melzer-Pellmann Tracking devices: J. Christiansen, F. Vasey, S. Mersi Calorimetry: P. De Barbaro, D. Barney, M. Mannelli Muon systems: A. Safonov, M. Abbrescia, K. Hoepfner/P. Schaeffer Accelerator and Experiment interface: W. Zeuner, M. Chamizo Llatas (CMS) o CMS week in Taipei Monday-Friday SEPT – Upgrade plenary dedicated to presentation of material for the ECFA workshop 4
Upgrade conference - editorial committee o Need arising to approve conference material – Two main categories of presentations in CINCO under general Upgrade or under Projects with overlap and sometimes wrong assignment Proposal to set-up a small common committee to approve abstracts and presentations based on current projects conference committee members plus UC, WG and Cross- coordination representatives 5
