Manifest Destiny Chapter 9 Section 2

I the Frontier Lures Settlers A. American Mission Amer. Began to believe their movement west and south was destined and ordained by god Editor of mag O’Sullivan coines the phrase “manifest destiny” to expand to Pac. And into Mexican Terr. Manifest= obvious and inevitable

B. Attitudes Towards the Frontier Many Americans also had practical reasons for moving west The abundance of land in the west was the biggest attraction Settlers moved west  merchants and manufacturers seeking new markets to sell their goods moved too Trans. Rev. allowed espansion of trade w/ Asia

II Settlers and Native Americans As settlers moved west it impacted Nat. Amer. Because they encroached on their land Nat. Amer. Tried to maintain their culture and traditions while settlers tried to assimilate them into Amer. Culture Assimilate= become part of

A. Black Hawk War Settlers in Illinoi tried to make Nat. Amer. Move west of the Miss but Nat. Amer. Resisted Chief Black hawk leads rebellion against US known as the Black Hawk War Lasted 4 months Tribes forcibly removed to areas west of the Miss

B. Fort Laramie Treaty Settlers moving west caused conflict with Nat. Amer. Nat. Amer. Tribes and US reps. Met in Laramie, Wyoming and sign Treaty of Laramie Treaty of Laramie= Nat. Amer. Groups control central plains/Nat. Amer. Agreed not to attack settlers and allowed construction of gov’t forts in exchange for the US gov’t respecting their boundaries and making yearly payments to the tribes Settlers still spilled into west and encroached on their land & US gov;t did not own up to its side of the treaty

III Trails West Some traveled west in search of opportunities while others served as missionaries and were fleeing persecution

A. Sante Fe, Oregon, & Mormon Trails Sante Fe Trail famous for trading Missionaries used Oregon Trail to reach Oregon Terr. And set up mission schools Goal was to convert and educate Nat. Amer. Mormons traveled west to escape persecution Mormon Church AKA Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, founded in NY We persecuted so they moved west  still persecuted in west  new learder Brigham Young urged them to move further west

IV Resolving Territorial Disputes Migration west brought disputes with other countries who had claims in western lands Eventually all but GB abandoned their claims Oregon Terr. Was main concern between US and GB Democratic Pres. James K. Polk called for complete annexation of Oregon Terr. Campaign slogan=“Fifty-Four Forty or Fight” Referred to the disputed border line GB and US come to an agreement on border which was less then Polk’s “Fifty-Four Forty stance
