Presentation transcript:

1.Students will distinguish the difference between adding and subtracting fractions 2.Students will be able to explain how to add and multiply fractions 3. Students will solve word problems of adding fractions and construct their own.

.

(Tell each child to do one problem and put the answer and their initials in the space provided.) *Please raise your hand or click the red X if you don’t understand, and I will walk you through a problem.

Now, Lets learn how to Add Fractions!!!

If the fraction has the same denominator (bottom number), then add straight across on the top and keep the same denominator.

1.If the bottom numbers are not the same then find a common denominator. How you find a common denominator is by finding a multiple of the two denominators. An easy way to find one is multiply the two denominators together. 2. Multiply both numbers on the first fraction by the bottom number of the second fraction. 3. You do that to both numbers and then you add straight across the top numbers and keep the same denominator the bottom numbers. 4. Simply and reduce your answer by finding the least common multiple of 6 and 8 which would be 2. So take each number (the top and bottom) and divide that by 2, and you get the final answer 3/4. 1.Example: 2 x 4= 8. Therefore both of the fractions will have a denominator of Example:1/2 x 4/4 = 4/8. 3. Example: (4/8+2/8)=6/8 4. Example: answer=3/4

Adding Fractions.. Does everyone understand? Please use the green check if you understand and the red check if you are not getting it. Good. Point on the problem that you want to solve, and solve it in the space provided. If you have any questions, please feel free to raise your hand, or you can just talk over the microphone.

What fraction of Girls chose their favorite animal to be either a Dog or a cat? A.4/29 B.25/29 C.7/28 D. 22/29 Directions: Use your pointer and point at what answer you think is correct. We will go through each question to make sure that you got it. Any questions, please raise your hand. What fraction of Boys chose either a lion or other to be their favorite animal? A. 3/28 B.7/28 C. 2/28 D. 11/28 How many girls like either cats or dogs as their favorite animal? A.20/29 B.22/29 C.25/29 D.2/29 How many girls and boys in the classroom chose dog as their favorite animal? A.22/57 B.28/57 C.27/57 D.32/57

Directions: Think of three more word problems and come up with the answer, and them to me. Then, first thing tomorrow we will switch and everyone will do someone else's word problems.
