Gideon Lessons on Greatness Judges 6-8

Judges 6: God has allowed Israel to be greatly impoverished at the hands of the Midianites because of the evil they had done.  They had turned from God to serve the Gods of the Amorites.  The children of Israel cried out to God for relief from their afflictions. Lessons From Gideon

Judges 6: Gideon was God’s choice to lead Israel and free them from oppression.  selected by God  prepared by God  faith strengthened by God Judges 7:1-7 - God chose the army of men to fight with Gideon.  Reduced the army from 32,000 men to 300 Lessons From Gideon

A Great Thing Happened Judges 7: Gideon, with his army of 300 men selected by God, put the oppressors to flight, who were “like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seaside for multitude.” Judges 7: 22-8:21 – they pursued and conquered the oppressors.

17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do.”

“Great things” can still happen when… 1.Good men step up and take the lead.  “Look on me, and do likewise… as I do, so shall you do” (7:17) God still desires and expects leadership.  I Pet. 5:1-4 – examples to the flock  1 Tim. 3:1-7 – examples in character  1 Tim. 4:12 – examples in all actions  Eph. 5:23 – husbands in God’s design  Eph. 6:4 – fathers to take lead in developing their children spiritually

“Great things” can still happen when… 1.Good men step up and take the lead. 2. Others faithfully follow. Judges 7:17-21  The soldiers followed Gideon’s example and great things happened as a result. “And every man stood in his place” (7:21) What would have happened if they had not?

“Great things” can still happen when… 1.Good men step up and take the lead. 2. Others faithfully follow. Judges 7:17-21  Great things can still happen when each one has enough faith to stand in their place and do what is theirs to do. God still expects faithful followers.  Heb. 13:17  Eph. 5:22-24  Eph. 6:1

Conclusion Judges 6:3-5 - Israel had a need…  For good men to step up and take the lead.  For others to faithfully follow.  Because they faced an adversary who sought to destroy them. How much more today? 1 Pet. 5:8
