Unit: Chemical Reactions Types of Chemical Reactions: Double Replacement and Combustion Day 6 - Notes

After today you will be able to… Identify a double replacement and combustion reaction Predict the products in words for single replacement reactions Predict the products in formulas for a combustion reaction Balance combustion reactions

Predicting Products 4.Double Replacement: Two compounds react to form two new compounds Common form: Compound + Compound  Compound +Compound AB + CD  AD + CB

Examples of double replacements: copper (I) + beryllium  sulfate oxalate copper (I) + beryllium oxalate sulfate Do not use the activity series for these reactions!

Examples of double replacements: A neutralization reaction is a type of double replacement reaction. Neutralization reaction: Is a reaction between an acid and a base (base – a metal hydroxide, ex: NaOH)

Example of a neutralization: Neutralization reactions are a special type of double replacement between an acid and a base that produces Salt (ionic compound) plus water). aluminum nitric  hydroxide + acid aluminum + water nitrate Water will always be a product! hydrogen nitrate

Predicting Products 5.Combustion: A reaction with oxygen (O 2 ) If your reactant contains: The product will be: CCO 2 HH2OH2O SSO 2 NN2N2

Examples: Predict the products and balance. ___ CH 4 + ___O 2  C H ___CO 2 + ___H 2 O O2 3 Tip: Balance the O 2 last. 4 4

Examples: Predict the products and balance. ___H 3 N + ___O 2  H N ___N 2 ___H 2 O O2 1 Tip: Put the ideal decimal coefficient, then double all coefficients to balance!
