Think about elements related to the characters, setting, and plot. You need to be specific with your answers to receive credit. 2.Discuss two differences between the stories. Think about elements related to the characters, setting, and plot. You need to be specific with your answers to receive credit. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION IN AT LEAST FIVE TO SEVEN SENTENCES:  Although these stories have clear similarities and differences, Sui Sin Far seems to assert that the husbands in both stories cannot expect to enjoy “the best of both worlds”? Explain what Far means by this idea. Reference specific examples from the stories.

Important Class Information  From this point on, we will have book checks everyday. Make sure you bring your books and materials to class  You need to purchase Cane by Jean Toomer (ISBN: )  Visit the Writing Center for Extra Credit  I will have your essays back next week.  Do you have any questions?

STORIES ABOUT WIFEHOOD AND MOTHERHOOD CONSIDER THE FOLLOWIG STORIES: “The Americanizing of Pau Tsu” (page 83-92) “The Land of the Free” (page ) “The Prize China Baby” (page )  What happens in these stories?  What are some important themes that come up in these stories as they relate to wifehood and motherhood? *Think about ideas that don’t apply to the male characters or the other the stories.  Based on the conclusions of these stories, what commentary does Far make about marriage? Miscegenation?  How does her own background affect or tie into this story?

Homework Due Thursday READING:  “Children of Peace” to “Pat and Pan”  Workbook: Angel Island poems and additional readings WRITING:  HQ9

“The Sing Song Woman” Divide into groups and consider the following ideas. Write down your answers on a piece of paper: 1.Plot: Describe the sequence of major events in the story. 2.Theme: The central idea(s) embodied by or explored in a literary work 3.Symbolism: The use of objects or events to suggest meaning beyond their immediate, physical presence.  “The Sing Song Woman” is different than any other Far story we’ve encountered. What makes this story stand apart from the other stories? What does Far want the reader to take away from the story?

Other Stories to Consider “The Chinese Boy-Girl” “Pat and Pan”  Not unlike the “The Sing Song Woman,” these two stories present a unique perspective concerning family.  How does Far define family in these stories? How do the Chinese immigrants define family? How do the white Americans define family?  Who interferes or attempts to redefine family? Why does this individual “over step” their assigned boundaries?  In the end, what conclusion does Far make about family?  What other elements make these stories stand out from Far’s other stories?

RWAL: How to Read Poetry ELEMENTS OF POETRY: The Speaker: Who is speaking, where is the speaker, and what is his or her state of mind? The Listener: Be attentive also to any other persons in the poem, particularly an implied listener. Is there a “you” to whom the poem is addressed? If the poem is spoken aloud, who is supposed to hear it? Imagery: Just as you should be open to the idea that there are frequently symbols in stories, you should pay attention to the images in poems. The best poetry seeks to make the abstraction concrete by creating vivid images appealing directly to the senses. A well-written poem will provide the mind of an attentive reader with sights, sounds, tastes, scents, and sensations.

ANGEL ISLAND POEMS  Discuss the background information about the poem.  Discuss the footnote terms you selected.  How many different words did the class define?  How did you select the terms you chose?  How did these words influence or change your understanding of the poem?  What were some common themes that connected these poems?  Which poem(s) stood out? Why were these poems unique or more impressive?  We are reading translations of the original poems. Does the fact that these poems are translated change the way you consider or read the poem?  What can a poem lose through translation?  What can a poem gain through translation?

Homework Due Tuesday READING:  Cane: “Karintha” to “Blood-Burning Moon” (Pages 3-49); RWAL: Chapter 6 WRITING:  HQ10
