“The Sing Song Woman” Divide into groups and consider the following ideas. Write down your answers on a piece of paper: 1.Plot: Describe the sequence of major events in the story. 2.Theme: The central idea(s) embodied by or explored in a literary work 3.Symbolism: The use of objects or events to suggest meaning beyond their immediate, physical presence.  “The Sing Song Woman” is different than any other Far story we’ve encountered. What makes this story stand apart from the other stories? What does Far want the reader to take away from the story?

Other Stories to Consider “The Chinese Boy-Girl” “Pat and Pan”  Not unlike the “The Sing Song Woman,” these two stories present a unique perspective concerning family.  How does Far define family in these stories? How do the Chinese immigrants define family? How do the white Americans define family?  Who interferes or attempts to redefine family? Why does this individual “over step” their assigned boundaries?  In the end, what conclusion does Far make about family?  What other elements make these stories stand out from Far’s other stories?

RWAL: How to Read Poetry ELEMENTS OF POETRY: The Speaker: Who is speaking, where is the speaker, and what is his or her state of mind? The Listener: Be attentive also to any other persons in the poem, particularly an implied listener. Is there a “you” to whom the poem is addressed? If the poem is spoken aloud, who is supposed to hear it? Imagery: Just as you should be open to the idea that there are frequently symbols in stories, you should pay attention to the images in poems. The best poetry seeks to make the abstraction concrete by creating vivid images appealing directly to the senses. A well-written poem will provide the mind of an attentive reader with sights, sounds, tastes, scents, and sensations.
