Year 11 revision How you can help to ensure they achieve to the best of their ability. Exam Dates: Biology – 21 May 2012 Chemistry – 24 May 2012 Physics – 30 May 2012 (Core Science multi choice. resits 22 June 2012)

Are there any concerns or questions you would like us to address tonight?

The plan is: 1. Environment 2. Techniques they can use and how you can help them 3. Sources of information

Revision and Learning  Require concentration  A comfortable place to study  Space for resources – posters / post-its  Food, water and regular breaks

Techniques – What do they do to revise? Active and passive methods  Reading  Taking notes  Mind maps / spider diagrams  Highlighting  Creating diagrams / images  Creating songs, rhymes, mnemonics  Answering questions (past papers)  Q cards

Information conversion  Processing information makes it stick a lot better in the mind.  Diagrams can be changed into words. Paragraph of prose, bullet points, key words  Processes can be changed into images. Flow chart, timeline, cartoon strip, mind map

 Can you think of a rhyme or poem (song, dance, rap, story) that might help to remember the four factors that affect the speed (rate) at which a chemical reaction happens?  Temperature, Concentration, Surface area, Catalyst.

Remember this

RCWC / RCTC  Read; Cover; Write; Check.  Read; Cover; Talk; Check.

Remember this  alternating current (a.c.)  frequency of 50 cycles per second (50 hertz)  UK mains supply is about 230 volts

Where can we get all the information from?  Moodle   BBC Bitesize   Revision guides  pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center- 2&pf_rd_r=1AXBRPT5D8YQ9R6PVC3M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p= &pf_rd_i= pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center- 2&pf_rd_r=1AXBRPT5D8YQ9R6PVC3M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p= &pf_rd_i=  AQA past papers & mark schemes  =03&tabid=1 =03&tabid=1

Top Tips for ‘The Big Day’ Read through the questions carefully twice and underline the key words. What is the ‘command’ word in the question? What is it asking you to do? Look at how many marks are available, use this to help plan your time and how many points you need to make. For extended writing tasks remember; P – Make a point E – Evidence it E – Explain it L – Link it and sum up Make sure you answer every question. Look on the last page, make sure you haven't turned over 2 pages at once. Try to use as much subject specific language as possible. Remember your glossary. Take all your equipment with you. You will need a full pencil case and a calculator.
