[Traffic and Parking Management in Bergamo] Bergamo 2.(035) Paolo Pesenti

Traffic Negative Effects October 8, Traffic jams Pollution Waste of time Stressed citizens Productivity reduction “External costs” Long cruising for parking Italy is the country with the highest numebr of cars per person (0.6) excluding Luxemburg and this condition inevitably create problems

Bergamo Situation Public transports and cycling do not receive the attention they should deserve Even if according to some surveys (ISFORT) citizens will be willing to use public transports for the same travel time October 8, In Bergamo there is an extensive use of car because the alternatives are unattractive

Bergamo Situation October 8, The Bergamo’s situation is not a negative exception in Italy, but it is the common “state of art” in all the country. Italy is in backwardness conditions respect to the north European countries in terms of efficient and eco-friendly transports. No innovative and sustainable solutions for transports poor Government investments Car is an hardly replaceable key element of our city INCREASING TRAFFIC

October 8, Two ways to solve the problem To solve this problem there are 2 solutions: the development of alternative and efficient mean of transports (private or public) or a proper implementation of a traffic management system Alternative and efficient means of trasport Traffic Management System

October 8, Traffic Management In dense urban areas, traditional construction of new capacity is cost-prohibitive and often physically impossible Bergamo has no a lot of opportunities to increase his capacity and physical infrastructures The current crisis of mobility can be solved with efficient urban planning and new technologies applied to traffic management

October 8, Bergamo Traffic Management Long queue and paralyzed traffic in Bergamo and the surrounded area during work days (Bergamo, Milan, Brescia) Poor system of traffic management :.Traffic data from existing solutions are highly inaccurate..No vehicle detection monitors installed. Monitoring traffic flow from closed circuit television videos (unreliable and time-consuming task)

What does Bergamo need? October 8, Intelligente use of infrastructures Real time info Citizens distributed and better decisions Prediction from hystorical data Advantages for inhabitants and authorities. ICT technologies such as microcontrollers and sensor. Informaton received on Pc or apps for smartphones. inhabitants can be active participants, enhancing the quality of the traffic management

Parking October 8, Between 8% and 74% of traffic in congested downtown areas is caused by people cruising for parking, spending between 3.5 and 14 minutes searching for a space each time they park Bergamo limits:. A lot of parking in narrow streets.. No wide parking spaces. No uniforme management of private and public parking areas
