Energy flow in Ecosystems
TEKS 5.9B: Describe how the flow of energy derived from the Sun, used by producers to create their own food, is transferred through a food chain and food.
What is Energy?. Energy is the capacity for action/doing work.

A producer is an organism that gets its energy from the sun. Example: sunflower plant.
How do organisms get energy?. Getting Energy Food chain – a sequence of connected producers and consumers Producer – an organism that makes its own food.
Decomposers are organisms that eat dead or decaying organisms. They carry out the natural process of decomposition. Fungi is the primary and most common.

Presentation transcript:

Within a food chain, some living things create the energy and some use the energy.

3 Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction from producers to various levels of consumers

There are organisms that create energy. These are called producers. Plants are producers. There are organisms that use energy. These are called consumers.

5 Energy Transfer Energy in an ecosystem originally comes from the sun Energy in an ecosystem originally comes from the sun Energy flows through Ecosystems from producers to consumers Energy flows through Ecosystems from producers to consumers – Producers (make food) – Consumers (use food by eating producers or other consumers) copyright cmassengale

6 Producers Sunlight is the main source of energy for most life on earth.Sunlight is the main source of energy for most life on earth. Producers contain chlorophyll & can use energy directly from the sunProducers contain chlorophyll & can use energy directly from the sun Plants make their own food using sunlight, soil, and other elements.

7 Consumers Organisms eat other organisms to obtain energy. (e.g. animals) Herbivores Herbivores – Eat Only Plants Carnivores Carnivores – Eat Only Other Animals

8 Consumers Omnivores (Humans) Omnivores (Humans) – Eat Plants & Animals Detritivores (Scavengers) Detritivores (Scavengers) – Feed On Dead Plant & Animal Remains (buzzards) Decomposers Decomposers – Fungi & Bacteria

9 Name the Producer, Consumers & Decomposers in this food chain:
