About The Only Way is Essex The Only way is Essex is a British reality show that shows real people in modified situations and saying unscripted lines however in a structured way. It debuted on 10 th of October on ITV 2. The show is filmed in Brentwood, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and Chigwell, which is close to London. It shows the lives of young, rich, sociable Essex boys and girls. The show has been described by the Daily Mirror as Britain’s version to “The Hills” and “Jersey Shore” which are reality tv shows shown in America. Viewing figures We tried to find viewing figures for Season one hard to find because they was not giving available figures, however we found a high increase of figures from Season one too Season two. The Only Way is Essex started and people didn’t like the show because they thought it was “tacky” and “cheap” however as it started to get popular in the eye of the media, people realized how much attention it got and they watched it and came attached to the show. The Only way is Essex won the Youtube Audience award at the BAFTA’s on April 19 th They was up against, Downtown Abbey, Sherlock, Miranda and The Killing and Big Fat Gypsy wedding.

Viewing figures We researched the viewing figures for a similar show on MTV called Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore is shown on MTV and we have found these viewing figures Season three.

Viewing figures We found that The Only Way is Essex got a lot more views because the show is broadcasted on ITV 2 and more people have access to ITV 2 then MTV.

Audience Profile This is a photo of a typical audience viewer for The Only Way is Essex. We can see she is very girly, due to the pink top, she likes to look good due to make up and long black hair and she seems to be very feminine. She seems she is a typical young female, either a student or young worker. We believe that a lot of female students will watch this because a lot of girls inspire to have the rich lifestyle of those in The Only Way. Also a lot of teenage girls like to watch programs that are full of drama and entertainment and this program has that shown. We don’t believe that there is specific ethnicity group for The Only Way is Essex, however there is no other cultures apart from British in this program therefore other cultures may not find that right because it’s stereotypical. Also a few gay men like The Only Way because its surrounded by fashion and high lifestyles which a lot of gay men enjoy.

AudienceProfile Old people will not enjoy this program as it doesn’t cover any stories and themes old people watch. Older people enjoy program on homes, history, knowledge, etc, and The Only Way is Essex is opposite to that because it’s full of young, fashionable people and old people don’t enjoy watching this.

AudienceNeeds MALES NEEDS AND WANTS; When a male is wanting to watch TV they are interested in certain things and themes. For example; Women Cars Football Sports The Only way is Essex is not a “male” program because it mainly is based around women and fashion and glamour, and men will not enjoy the storylines and drama. The colors they want to see are basic colors however bold, neon like colors to stand out because a lot of males like to stand out. They also like manly colors; Red; Blue etc. A lot of males like language that is slang like and also contains swearing.

The colors that girls like to see is pink, purple, feminine colors.

Drama The Only way is Essex is definitely a “teenage girl” program because it is full of attractive women with high life styles who a lot of teenage girls inspire to be like, beauty, fame and money wise. Teenage girls enjoy watching drama and The Only Way is Essex has storylines that involve bitchness, friendships etc. Teenage girls want to see colors that are pink, purple, very feminine, however light, natural colors, peach, light blue for different shows. They want to see girly language however teenage language, eg slang as teenage girls know what it means.

The colors they want to see are basic colors that are dull, grey, boring like colors that are dark and not bold. They want to hear and watch suitable language with no swearing.

Genre The genre of The Only Way is Essex is a reality TV drama. So many people have watched these shows and dreamed of having the lifestyle of those shown on screen. Reality TV is a genre that shows real people says unscripted lines and do day to day things however spice it up with drama to make the audience more interested. Genre Reality TV has got a lot of slack because the media has shown people who are in these shows to be only looking for fame and people are saying it’s an easy way to becoming famous. Shows like these have been classed as “tacky” and “a bad way to represent people and places”. Some people in Essex have been ashamed to be living in Essex now because people are made to believe that all people in Essex are “rich” an “stubborn” and “fake”. This is a way of stereotyping.

Stereotyping Stereotyping is way that people are made to be and who they are, when most of the time they are nothing like the way they are shown. For example, the program “Skins” shows all teenagers to be “party animals” and “drug addicts” and teenagers who just get up to nothing but lounge about and violent. A lot of teenagers do not enjoy being stereotyped for being someone there not, but Skins is an example of stereotyping in TV shows. A similar reality show that shows stereotyping is Real Housewives of Orange County. The women shown in this are all shown to be “bossy” “get what they want, when they want” women and a lot of women in Orange County are ashamed because people think they are what the show shows.

Legal constraints All TV shows and films have to make sure they follow legal rules before broadcasting the show. Also they have to make sure what they are filming is suitable and have actors permission to film. Shows that are shown after nine [Watershed] can show a lot more topics in there shows then before nine. After nine shows can show, violence in a more dramatic way, sex, drugs and alcohol, and can have swearing however to a certain degree that is still suitable for TV. This is set by Ofcom and they said that watershed on standard television in the UK starts at 9:00pm and finishes at 5:30am the next morning.

Legal constraints Legal and ethical constraints Privacy The company of the show has to have a legal document of them agreeing to film them. If they didn’t it would be unacceptable to film individuals in private places without their consent breaching the data protection act. It’s also important that the show doesn’t show or say there actually the cast address because this will give the public to much information and could put the individual’s person’s life at danger, but they can say the country or county. They also can’t discuss their personal private life such as what they get up too in their own home. However if the people who are being shown have accepted an agreement to be shown then they can show anything they desire. The main issue producers have to take in to considering for reality TV shows are to make sure they have illegally permission to air the show. They also need to limit certain things they do like going to the toilet, showering and ect. And less discussion about their private life. Unless they agreed to be shown in the public lime light or the public have the right to know what’s being said.

Defamation The show can’t write or say anything that’s not true for example it’s not set up for your entertainment when it is. The producer of the show should make sure none of the cast defames any one in a negative way whiles their on that show. If the produce fails to prevent this from happen the victim can file for a lawsuit. None of the cast on the only way is Essex has not defames any of the cast members. Copyright Copy right is a big part of media products such as music, dvd, drawings and written text and ect. They all have to be protected by copyright to use content in TV show or film. If they do not do this they can result in paying a $25,000 (£13,349) fine and a one year prison sentence. All the material that is used in the show must be their own if they want to use any other footage, from another TV programme, music song or product in their show permission has to be gained prior to using or showing their product. Codes The Only Way is Essex uses a lot of codes to show the audience it is aimed at. For example, the theme tune for The Only Way is Essex is a very bubbly, catchy song, with a disco theme for a glamour appeal atmosphere. The colours that they use are pink girly colours, however gold and silver are sometimes use to show style, glamour and class. The producer has used young, attractive, fashionable, modern stars to represent the shows because the people that tend to watch the show, to aim to have the lifestyle of those shown.
