The 10,000 Hour Rule It’s not enough to be born with a talent to be an expert.
Violins in Berlin Psychologists asked violin students of a music school in Berlin, “Ever since you first picked up the violin, how many hours have you practiced?” All had begun playing at roughly five years of age with similar practice times. However, by age twenty, the elite performers averaged more than 10,000 hours of practice each, while the less able performers had only 4,000 hours of practice.
Further analysis reveals how essential it is to have 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any field. ● Bill Gates & Paul Allen spent hours programming (20 to 30 hours a week), skipping athletics and even sneaking out at night to get in computer time. ● For example, The Beatles spent two years in Germany playing long hours each day (8 hours a day, 7 days a week, for a good chunk of the year) before they became famous which adds up to roughly 10,000 hours of practice. ● Although Mozart was skilled at the piano, he didn’t start writing his own compositions until he reached 21 years of age, the age by which he had achieved 10,000 hours of practice.
