Chapter 16 Lesson 2

Did You Know? Most problems of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems can be prevented with proper care and healthy decisions.

Health Behaviors and the Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems A. These healthful habits can help reduce many of the risk factors associated with problems of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems: 1. Follow a well-balanced diet that is low in saturated fats, cholesterol, and salt. 2. maintain a healthy weight. 3. Participate in regular aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes three to four times per week. 4. Avoid the use of tobacco products. 5. Avoid illegal drugs. B. Blood pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular health.

Discussion Question What health behaviors can you choose that will reduce problems with high blood pressure?

Cardiovascular System Problems A. Certain heart problems are congenital, or present at birth. B. Cardiovascular disease is a group of diseases of the cardiovascular system. C. Heart murmurs are abnormal sounds made as blood flows through the heart D. Varicose veins form if valves in the veins do not close tightly enough to prevent backflow of blood. Physical activity helps prevent varicose veins.

Cardiovascular System Problems E. Anemia is a condition in which the ability of the blood to carry oxygen is reduced. F. Leukemia is a form of cancer in which any one of the different types of white blood cells is produced excessively and abnormally. G. Hemophilia is an inherited disorder in which the blood does not clot properly.

Lymphatic System Problems A. Immune deficiencies occur when the immune system can no longer protect against infection. Some immune deficiencies are congenital. B. Hodgkin’s disease is a type of cancer that affects the lymph tissue. C. Tonsillitis is another possible problem with the lymphatic system. Tonsils are part of the immune system and help reduce the number of pathogens entering the body.
