Art and Spaces of Inclusion: Asylum and Re-Visualizing the City of Glasgow Presenter: Dr. Kirsten Emiko McAllister School of Communication

Abstract In this presentation Dr. McAllister will examine the role of arts in creating spaces of inclusion for people seekingasylum in cities in the economic north. The presentation draws on her research in the city of Glasgow in Scotland, which is now one of the few cities in “fortress Europe” that has policies welcoming people seeking asylum (Sherif 2007). She will examine one of the many art projects in this city (Kester 2004) organized by Street Level Photo. In the “Multi-story” project, asylum seekers have been invited to explore ways to revisualize and re-imagine their places of temporary residence in destitute council tower blocks on the outskirts of Glasgow. Outside of the economic and social core of the city, displaced from their homelands and without citizenship rights, they are confined alongside unemployed Glaswegians. The photographic project attempts to re-make these places of residence by mediating experiences of loss and unbearable memories (Kaplan 2005) and bridging the fear between groups in order to transform the city itself.
