Presentation transcript:

The principles of design are “rules” to follow in order to make a strong composition /artwork.

1. What is the emphasis in this painting? (focal point) The area emphasized in an artwork grabs your attention first. This is achieved by contrast in an element or placement . 1. What is the emphasis in this painting?

Balance The feeling of equality in art (=). Balance can be symmetrical or evenly balanced or asymmetrical and un-evenly balanced.   2. Which picture is asymmetrical?

Unity/ Harmony Brings together a artwork.  If your artwork was using wavy lines and organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines and not put in just one geometric shape. 3. What kind of mood does this painting give?

Repetition/ Pattern Repetition is a repeat of an element. Repetition creates unity in art and design. Patterns are repetitions of elements. You can create a pattern by repeating a line, shape, color, or texture over and over again. 4. What is the picture of?

Contrast/Variety Extreme change in elements. Contrast can be used to bring objects out and forward and indesign to “grab” your attention. 5. Where do you see contrast in the art room?

6. What kind of action is seen in this painting? Movement A sense of motion in an artwork. Movement adds excitement to your work by showing action and directing the viewers eyes through the picture plane. 6. What kind of action is seen in this painting?

Rhythm Is how the artwork “moves” or “dances.”  It is seen in repeating of shapes and colors—alternating lights and darks gives a sense of rhythm. 7. What kind of music would you play to match the rhythm of the painting?
