New Tools and Technologies to Assess Public Transport Network and Accessibility October 8, 2015 Istanbul Dr. Jen JungEun Oh Senior Transport Economist, World Bank

World Bank in the last 15 years… Financed 70+ urban transport projects, in the amount of $12 billion – Mass transit systems (metro, BRT, tram) – System Integration – Non-motorized transport – Traffic management – Leveraged additional investments of about $8- 10 billion (government co- financing, climate financing, private sector)

What technology?

General Transit Feed Specification – GTFS Open data standard for digitizing public transport routes – Routes, stops (GIS coordinates), operating schedules, fares – Can be used in any database application or program (.txt file)

OpenStreetMap Wikipedia of map – free and editable Crowd sourcing from data collected by registered users, using manual survey, GPS devices, aerial photography, etc. Let’s try!

OK… so what? We actually used these tools to assess how well public transport networks works! Without a penny paid for expensive transport modeling software

Manila, in 9 months

Kiev, in 2 months

Are the routes duplicated?

How accessible are some locations by PT?

You are right, this is not enough… We need the demand side data to get the full picture

Where people live and work (study, shop, play)?

Which neighborhoods are not served by PT?

What about actual number of people using PT? Boarding and alighting survey GPS-enabled hand-held devices Smart phone application Smart phone application that assists data collection Eager volunteers

Passenger flows on ground transport All ground transport Tram Tram & Trolleybus Tram, Trolleybus & General Bus Tram, Trolleybus, General Bus & Marshrutka

Before After Can we improve by re-arranging some routes?

 Larger vehicles making fewer trips  Fuel cost & emission savings  Direct greater fare revenue to KPT IndicatorBeforeAfter Total 2-way route length (km) # Routes199 Avg. 2-way route length (km/route) Vehicle km travelled/day55,00038,000 Avg.
