The Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) Methodology –In home –2008, 2010 –n = approx 1, years, weighted to NZ population –Response rate around 60% –Population survey Collects information related to HSC’s programme areas

Tobacco Questions in the HLS Smoking status ABC programme, and cessation resources used Parent/caregiver perceptions of influence on children Child’s smoking status Knowledge of smoking prevalence Campaign monitoring Public support

Public support for tobacco control Why do we collect information about public support? –As part of broad monitoring –To understand our audience (so that we develop approaches appropriately) –To inform the sector –Other agencies use to guide/inform policy decisions (helps determine feasibility of changes)

Questions covering Societal attitudes about tobacco –Smoking a real problem –Society disapproves –The government should do more Public support for tobacco control measures – Reduce access – less outlets –Branding and packaging –Ban on displays –Increase tax – help quitting Public support for the ‘End Game’ –Should not be sold in New Zealand in 10 years Some questions from the New Zealand Arm of the ITC study

Presentation of information NOTE: Preliminary data Respondents = full sample 2008 and 2010 Agreement level with statements (rotated) on 5-point likert scale 2008 data has been reweighted to be comparable with 2010 Preliminary statistical testing: chi-square test of independence (further analyses to be done)

Are societal attitudes about tobacco changing?

Summary: Societal attitudes Agreement with these statements ranging from 65% to 79% The majority of respondents are concerned and think that the government should do more

Is support for specific tobacco control measures changing?

Summary: Public support for tobacco control measures The majority of respondents are supportive – with agreement ranging from 59% to 67% Support for specific tobacco control measures is increasing in strength.

What about support for the ‘End Game’?

The End Game? So, people have high levels of –Concern about tobacco –Support for specific policy measures…. Which are increasing in strength But what about the End Game? –Cigarettes and tobacco should not be sold in New Zealand in10 years time

Past learnings

Summary Societal concern –Agreement ranges 65% to 79%, and is increasing Specific measures –Agreement ranges from 59% to 67%, and is increasing The End Game –Agreement 43%, a slight decrease, and an increase to 27% ‘sitting on the fence’
