Accessible Presentations For MS PowerPoint 2013 Presented by: Valerie East

Create Slide Deck Quickly  Tip: Use the Outline Tab to Create new slides

Master Slides – What are they?  Set of style pages for different layout formats  Change in template design automatically reformats slides  Can create your own master layouts to suit your needs  Can add additional ‘place holders’ to existing layouts

Why are Slide Layouts Important?  Provide Placeholders which are displayed on the Outline (picked up by screen readers)  Tip: If text boxes are added in individual slides they do not appear on the outline and are not read by screen reader.

Explore  Look at the master slides  Add SLC logo –  Set Transparent Background  Change the font styles/sizes & see want happens to your slide show  Change a layout format, or create a new layout format

The Importance of Titles  Include titles on each slide  Adds navigation for screen readers  Similar to Headings in Word  Tip: If you don’t want to “see” your title when presenting, put it behind the image.

Reading Order  If text boxes are added in individual slides they do not appear on the outline and are not read by screen reader.  In PDF, text boxes will be read in the order that you put them in. Check reading order pane (Home > Arrange > Selection Pane)

Fonts  Styles – Serif vs Sans Serif  Size – 30 point minimum  Points per page – 6-7 max
