Objectives: SWBAT  Analyze the concept of Law  Identify the expectations that society has for laws  Identify the key varieties of law  Analyze the impact of Hammurabi’s Code

What is the Law?  Brief discussion:  What is a law?  What should a law do?  Why do we have laws?  Who should make those laws?  Who should enforce those laws? 5 MIN

The expectations of the law RULE OF LAW  The hallmark of a democratic society is the RULE OF LAW  In a democracy no one can be above the law  Laws are generally a reflection of the values of a society  Protect basic human rights  Promote fairness  Resolve conflicts  Promote order and stability  Promote “desirable behavior”  Represent the will of the majority  Protect the rights of minorities
