BODY PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT 11H

GOAL: OUTLINE BODY PARAGRAPHS  CHECK-IN WITH YOUR ACTIVITY SHEET  SIGN-UP FOR SMALL GROUP MINI LESSON FOR THE DAY.  TOPIC= WHAT IS A TOPIC SENTENCE AND HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE MADE ONE. THIS WEEKEND: DRAFT OF ESSAY: INTRO AND TWO BODY PARAGRAPHS.

STRONG THESIS= STRONG BODY PARAGRAPHS  Think of body paragraphs as a reason why your thesis is correct.  Example: Although many think The Great Gatsby shows the triumph of the American Dream, it actually reinforces the idea that it is difficult to move between social classes because wealth is not evenly distributed or respected, making it impossible to emulate a rags to riches story.

How do I outiline those ideas into topic sentences?  1 st : Need to prove that GG is pessimistic take on the American Dream  2 nd : Using “Alienation and Social Class”-the rich need the poor to stay poor and alienated. Once someone moves through the classes, they are punished for it. (Gatsby dead).  3 rd : Horatio Alger myths exist to keep working class and poor working for something—to give hope. Daisy was Gatsy’s “myth.” She is his hope. Hope fades. Gatsby dead.  4 th : Twenties were about Conspicuous Consumption— showing off wealth. But when you show off at the Gatsby level, you are bound to get into trouble.  Although sometimes you have a person survive and move from lower to upper class, those stories are few and far between.

Turning the ideas into topic sentences  I have the outline of the paragraphs and I know what texts I will use.  Need to make sure that I stay focused on the topic within my paragraph.
