This is me… Twig World – Educational films and resources Teacher Network Manager – I’m not selling anything!

This is you… Digitally Savvy? Primary / middle / secondary? Ice breaker

These are your learners…

ECIS: ‘All my learning happens in social spaces.’ ‘No matter where you are in the world, there’s always someone online to answer questions, share their expertise and simply chat about what’s happening in their lives.’ ‘Part of digital literacy is knowing what information to pull out. There’s a lot of stuff out there. There’s a lot of stuff that’s not useful.’

Why are students so responsive to multimedia? Students are surrounded by visual phenomena and new technologies. There is evidence to suggest that young people growing up in today’s world are developing different learning styles from previous generations, due to their greater and increasing use of technology.

Why are learners so responsive to multimedia? 36% of year olds say they undertake cross-media multi-tasking when at home with their phone, television and tablet. 42% of s say they do multi-tasking ‘most times’ when at home. Ofcom Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes Report (2013)

Why are learners so responsive to multimedia? Studies have shown that 2/3 teachers find that students learn more when TV or Video is used. Close to 70% find that student motivation increases when TV / video is used. Studies conducted by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (2004)

Multimedia Learning Studies have shown that people will generally remember: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they hear and see Marshall (2002) cites the conclusions of Wiman and Mierhenry (1969), extending Dale's "Cone of Experience,"

Multimedia Learning Digital natives not only prefer this method of learning but may actually have a heightened ability to process information that is presented to them in different forms, such visual and audio.

Where to use Digital Resources Communicating difficult concepts via multimedia Consolidating what has already been learnt Allowing students to be a creator (video, podcast, presentation) Opportunities for collaboration Giving Real World examples

Advantages of Digital Resources Highly visual – for today’s visually literate generation Interactive – as the tech generation expects Flexible – adaptable to suit individual learning pace Supportive – captions and computer instant translation for EAL and SEN students Omnipresent – school or home access, on the bus, waiting at the dentist … Enjoyable – motivation and fun is also important to engage learning

Learning Values of Multimedia Grab student’s attention. Generate interest in class. Draw on student’s imagination. Improve attitude towards content and learning. Help students remember. Increase understanding. Foster creativity. Inspire and motivate students.
