WELCOME! INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY

INTRODUCTIONS Names Three questions: 1.Why are you interested/curious about astronomy? 2.What is one thing/fact/idea you already know about astronomy? 3.What is one thing you hope to take away from this class?

ME Who I am Where I come from My astronomy background What I like about astronomy What I hope to accomplish with you all

WHAT’S THE POINT? What’s astronomy and why study it? The answer to those questions lie in our nature as humans Astronomy 3,000 years ago looks very different than it does today BUT it is still the same process, we are still looking for the same answers and asking the same questions

QUESTIONS What is the universe? The world? How did it begin? Where did it come from? Where did we humans come from? What is OUR place in the world? In the universe? How do we make sense of it all?

CREATION MYTHS/ORIGIN STORIES Everywhere around the world people tell stories about the creation of the world and how humans came into being Some real, some imaginitive But all contain powerful emotional symbols and profound truths Santa Claus HAND OUT COMPARISON WORKSHEET

MODERN SCIENTIFIC Read the article and fill out the chart Some sections might not have answers Does this “story” give is answers? Do we believe it? Why? Take 5 minutes to write down your thoughts

ORIGIN STORIES Take out the origin stories worksheet Split up into groups Each group will have 5 minutes to read their origin story and fill out the correct column with information Then we will regroup and discuss as a class

DE-BRIEF What is the purpose of these origin stories? Why did these cultures create them? What does it say that some parts of these stories are strange and unusual? Do you think it matters? What do these stories have in common? What are they attempting to explain? Are they successful?

MOVIE PITCH Mythology is seen as fanciful, playful stories about Gods and origins Yet it still plays a role in our popular culture, movies like Thor use mythology to entertain In this activity you and your group will write up a brief synopsis of your own movie pitch Your movie must include a story around the origin of the world and of human beings, you will then pitch this to the rest of the class Your classmates will then vote on which “movie” should be funded
