WATER TESTING LAB

Pre lab Reference solution – a solution of know composition used as a comparison –[one know to contain the sought ion Control- controls are groups where no phenomenon is expected

PRE LAB Confirming test – positive test confirms the presence of the ion[due to change in color or formation of precipitate ] Precipitate – change in color of appearance of sample due to formation of an insoluble substance negative test –no change in appearance [no color or precipitate] means ion is not present or present in very low amounts

Materials Micro plate, pipettes, tooth picks, distilled water, tap water, dead sea water, reference solutions Testing solutions –KSCN,AgNO 3, Barium chloride

precaution Follow all lab safety rules Protect eyes and skin wear goggles and aprons Do not taste or smell any chemicals, do not touch chemicals with bear hands If any chemical falls on your skin wash with cold water tell the teacher Some chemicals are toxic and others stain skin handle with care Wash hands at the end of the lab

Precaution Label a white sheet of paper as show in the data table Label pipettes with a permanent marker Do the touch the pipette with samples when dispensing liquids Do not touch the tip of the pipettes Stir each well with a separate tooth pick Clean up – toothpicks in garbage, wash plate as instructed, pipettes in garbage
