METACOGNITION  Simply Put….THINKING ABOUT THINKING!  This activity makes thinking visible. It also makes you become a better reader. If you practice visualizing what you read, it helps you understand.  This is coupled with our next concept…

SCHEMA  DEFINED: Activating your own network of prior knowledge  For example, if you have experienced a death or divorce your experiences in life are different from someone who has not experienced these obstacles.  Your schema can be applied to what you are reading. This can make the text relatable to your own life and experiences.  The more you read or experience the wider your schema becomes.

Why is schema important?  It helps you relate to a story, character or theme.  There are multiple approaches to reading and we are going to learn one approach by wearing “lenses.”  Just like wearing glasses, you are going to see a situation through the eyes of another person. Your schema will vary from the person next to you. It is unique, just like you!

Lenses: CULTURAL READING  In order to empathize or put yourself in somebody else’s shoes, you need to understand where that person or character is coming from.  A cultural reading is one approach that will aid you in this journey.

What is a Cultural Reading?  A critical approach to reading  Study of race  Study of class  Study of gender  Links between text and historical culture  Particular Events and demonstrating parallels KEYWORDS for cultural studies  Ideology (the way somebody views the world)  Power (or lack of)  Empathy –Understanding and entering into another’s feelings
