Phylum Arthropoda Name Means: “Jointed-Foot”  Trilobita  Examples: trilobites, now extinct  Crustacea  Examples: shrimp, crabs, lobsters, barnacles…  Chelicerata  Examples: spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks, horseshoe crabs…  Uniramia  Examples: centipedes, millipedes, insects

The Basics…  Symmetry: All arthropods possess bilateral symmetry.  Body Openings: Two (mouth & anus)

Classifying Characteristics All arthropods possess:  Segmented Bodies: Head, thorax, abdomen, etc.  Jointed Appendages: Legs, antennae, etc.  Exoskeleton : Outer shell for protection & support.  Cephalization: Brain, compound eyes, feeding structures, etc.  Complex Body Systems: Digestive, respiratory, reproductive, nervous, circulatory, etc.

Reproduction & Feeding  All arthropods reproduce sexually. Most often internal fertilization & development. Insects undergo metamorphosis…egg, larva, pupa, adult…  Arthropods obtain food in many ways. Herbivores, carnivores, parasites. Mouthparts are specialized for food types.

Importance…  You and your partner should read Insects & People found on page 764 in the textbook.  Write at least six reasons why arthropods are important…some might be good, some might be bad.

Interesting Extras…  Go to:  In the Search All Videos Box, type in one of the following arthropod groups (pick whatever one interests you!) Crabs, Spiders, Bugs, Bees, Lobsters, Shrimp, Beetles, Centipede, Butterfly, Mosquito. A group of videos will pop up for each group. Pick and watch one video from each group.  Explain the video as an interesting extra for arthropods.  Do this for five different videos and interesting extras.
