Your University. Missouri’s Future. Speaker’s Name Here Date

Your university. Missouri’s future. Goal: Be recognized as one of the best public research universities in the nation and world Missouri’s only public, land-grant, doctoral-granting research institution Educates more students than any other public or private institution in the state Four distinct campuses, consolidated health center and extension component; all share common vision

Higher Education Our state university system is a mirror reflection of how much we, as Missourians, value higher education. For nearly 170 years, the University of Missouri has been a proud reflection of Missouri’s thirst for learning, desire for growth and drive for innovation. But today, that reflection is beginning to grow dim... We need your help.

Four Critical Initiatives 1.Caring for Missourians 2.Taking intellectual capital to market 3.Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty 4.Building and preserving our physical infrastructure

Four Critical Initiatives 1.Caring for Missourians 2.Taking intellectual capital to market 3.Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty 4.Building and preserving our physical infrastructure

Caring for Missourians Looming crisis in Missouri health care – 14 th in nation in the number of people 65 and older – Communities can’t fill openings for health care professionals – Shortages Physicians: 95% of counties underserved Nurses: 20% shortage by 2015 Pharmacists: Shortage of 157,000 by 2020 Dentists: 93% of counties are underserved

Caring for Missourians UM health care system – Serves more than 164,000 patients – Focuses on 26 community service areas – Provides $49 million in uncompensated care

Caring for Missourians Limited funding – 220 applicants turned away from UM’s three nursing schools – MU & UMKC medical schools rank among bottom 7 of 74 schools in terms of state support National average = $94,000 UM = $32,000

Caring for Missourians The plan – Teaming up with all of the state’s public two- and four-year institutions – Goal to increase number of health professional graduates by 20% – In total, requesting $39.8 million from General Assembly If approved, equates to 900 additional health care professionals over 5 years

Four Critical Initiatives 1.Caring for Missourians 2.Taking intellectual capital to market 3.Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty 4.Building and preserving our physical infrastructure

Taking intellectual capital to market UM is an economic growth engine for the state UM infuses nearly $572 million into the state’s economy, creating almost $1.1 billion in economic activity and more than 13,000 jobs UM generates a 5:1 return for every dollar appropriated

Taking intellectual capital to market MU had two discoveries on Discover’s top 100 science stories in the world – The only public or private university in Missouri on the list Each campus contributes to the innovation initiative: – Missouri S&T: chrome-free primer – UMKC: regeneration for bone loss in jaw – UMSL: $2 million grant to study plant lipids as an energy replacement to petroleum

Taking intellectual capital to market The plan – $1.5 million request in state funding for: Professional staff Software resources Grants to campus faculty

Four Critical Initiatives 1.Caring for Missourians 2.Taking intellectual capital to market 3.Retaining and recruiting world- class faculty 4.Building and preserving our physical infrastructure

Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty Strong faculty attracts the best and brightest students The university has been falling behind in competitive faculty pay for 9 years

Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty Average national faculty salary increase between : – Increases in surrounding states: 29%-47% – UM was only 20% MU ranks last out of 33 public AAU universities in the growth of base faculty salaries Other three UM campuses also significantly lag behind peers

Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty The plan – $21.6 million investment in compensation – Will bring salaries of ranked faculty to average salary levels of comparable institutions – Funding for this initiative was not included in the 2009 state appropriations, creating a need to reallocate resources within the UM System

Four Critical Initiatives 1.Caring for Missourians 2.Taking intellectual capital to market 3.Retaining and recruiting world-class faculty 4.Building and preserving our physical infrastructure

Building and preserving our physical infrastructure Regardless of the quality of teaching that goes on inside, our facilities can either demonstrate to the outside world that we are a first-class institution … or that we are struggling just to keep pace.

Building and preserving our physical infrastructure Quality facilities = quality educational environment Preventative repair and renovations needed New construction needed to accommodate programs, students State-of-the-art equipment that helps drive innovation

Facilities for the Future Missouri ranks 47 th in capital expenditures per capita for higher education

Facilities for the Future NEED $624 million University’s Share: Private gifts & capital reserves General Assembly request $497 m $127 m Critical Repairs: $35 m Highest Priorities: $346 m
