Lesson 61: Quarterly and Meiosis Review DO NOW: (5 minutes) What is the difference between haploid and diploid? Hint: Review Meiosis Vocab HOMEWORK: Meiosis Quiz 12.4.15 Watch Karyotyping Video on Google Classroom Answer the 2 assigned questions on video. Today’s Plan: Do Now Review Quarterly Complete Meiosis Review Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to Differentiate between the two phases and outcomes of meiosis. Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.

Do Now Answers Haploid: A cell that contains only a SINGLE set of chromosomes. Diploid: A cell that contains BOTH sets of homologous chromosomes

Lesson 62: Karyotyping Complete Meiosis Review page 3 and 4. DO NOW: (5 minutes) In the Mitosis/Meiosis Trial, Martha had one extra chromosome 21. What was the concern with having an extra chromosome? What is karyotyping? HOMEWORK: Meiosis Quiz 12.4.15 Complete Meiosis Review page 3 and 4. Review your notes on textbook page 275- 278. *This will help with the review!* Today’s Plan: Do Now Karyotyping Activity What is a zygote? Do abnormal chromosome numbers always result in Down syndrome? What are 3 ways a doctor can get a sample of chromosomes? If we took a magnified photograph of a cell in prophase/interphase could we see the chromosomes? 3. Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to 1. Analyze karyotypes and use them as a diagnostic tool to determine genetic disorders.

Do Now In the Mitosis/Meiosis Trial, Martha had one extra chromosome 21. What was the concern with having an extra chromosome? An extra chromosome 21 could lead to Down’s Syndrome once the egg is fertilized. 2. What is karyotyping? Scientists take a photograph of the chromosomes in a cell. They organize them by size and banding pattern. Then look for possible genetic diseases in humans.

Purpose: look for genetic diseases. How? Take a picture of chromosomes in a cell, organize them, place them in order of decreasing size. Notes: XX: female XY: male

Notes Normal Male Notation: 46, XY Normal Female Notation: 46, XX Disorder: 47, XY, 18+ (male extra #18) 47, XX, +19 (female extra #19)

Lesson 63: Mitosis/Meiosis Card Sort DO NOW: (5 minutes) 1. What are 3 similarities between mitosis and meiosis? HOMEWORK: Meiosis Quiz 12.4.15 Complete Meiosis Review page 3 and 4. Review your notes on textbook page 275- 278. *This will help with the review!* Today’s Plan: Do Now Card Sort Review Mitosis Quiz What kinds of cells undergo mitosis? If a cell has 25 chromosomes during prophase, how many chromosomes will each of the news cells have after mitosis completion? 4. Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to Explain the differences and similarities between meiosis and mitosis. Classify descriptions and terms into mitosis or meiosis categories.

Closure Complete summary questions.

Lesson 64: Making Koala Cells- Mitosis DO NOW: (5 minutes) 1. Take out your HW- Comparing Mitosis & Meiosis: Student Summary Sheet 2. Read Koala Cells Handout Page 1. 3. What are you doing in this Koala investigation? HOMEWORK: Meiosis Quiz TOMORROW! Review: Meiosis Review and Comparing Mitosis & Meiosis: Student Summary Sheet Today’s Plan: Do Now, Making Koala Cells Part 1, Closure What is the diploid number of chromosomes in Koalas? Does each chromosome carry only one gene? Are all of the ear patch related genes on the same chromosome? Do the daughter cells have the diploid or haploid number of chromosomes? OBJECTIVE: We will learn to Explain the differences and similarities between meiosis and mitosis. Classify descriptions and terms into mitosis or meiosis categories.

Do Now- Answers

Checkpoint questions What is the diploid number of chromosomes in Koalas? (it is 46 in humans) ______10__________ How many homologous pairs of chromosomes does a Koala have in each somatic cell? (hint: humans have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs) _______5_________ Does each chromosome carry only one gene? ___no there are many genes on each chromosome___ Are all the ear patch related genes on the same chromosome? ___no___

checkpoint questions 4. Do the daughter cells have the diploid or haploid number of chromosomes? ___________diploid (2 of each size or #)__________________ 5. Are the daughter cells different or identical? _____identical to the original and each other__ 6. When does mitosis occur? (give at least 2 different scenarios) _when an ORGANISM grows by gaining more cells or when new cells are needed to replace damaged or dead cells. It also happens in tumor formation._ 7. Does mitosis make somatic body cells or gametes (sperm & egg)? __somatic cells_______

Closure How does the process of mitosis ensure that the daughter cells will be IDENTICAL? Why doesn’t crossing over occur in mitosis?
