User Interface Improvements AASHTOWare Bridge Design/Rating User Group Training Meeting Virginia Beach – August 2013

Background – User Interface Impr.’s Strong interest in User Interface Improvements expressed at 2012 User Group Meeting. Two documents forwarded afterward: 1)Proposed Input Revisions for AASHTOWare Bridge Rating Software – Gary Kinchen, State Bridge Load Rating Engineer, NMDOT Bridge Design Bureau 2)Simplified Bridge Workspace Tree View – Jim Duray, Project Manager, Michael Baker, Inc.

Background – User Interface Impr.’s November 2012 Task Force meeting: Reviewed both documents. Decided to compile a list of six high value items pulled from both documents with the intention to incorporate the three highest ranked items in the Version 6.5 Work Plan. After the meeting, the TF identified three specific UI improvements and asked the Contractor to estimate the top three.

Background – User Interface Impr.’s January 2013 Task Force meeting: Reviewed the cost estimates. As originally proposed, the enhancement estimates/work was high. Discussed intent as a group, clarified purpose and the Contractor proposed alternate methods to accomplish the work. The alternate methods resulted in meeting the original intent with a substantial reduction in cost and were incorporated into the 6.5 Work Plan.

Background – User Interface Impr.’s April 2013 Task Force meeting: Decided to identify additional high priority/ high value User Interface items to possibly group into a task for a future Work Plan. Broke down previous documents into UI enhancement categories. Sent to the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) prior to their May meeting. The TAG prioritized the existing UI ideas and added a significant number of additional ideas based on group discussion.

Background – User Interface Impr.’s Six categories of UI Improvement: Eliminating unnecessary user actions at scroll bars and drop-down menus Reducing input Better grouping input by association/function. Using radio buttons to move less commonly used items of the Bridge Workspace Simplifying the Bridge Workspace tree Expanding the number and visibility of wizards to input specific superstructure types.

Background – User Interface Impr.’s June 2013 Task Force meeting: Reviewed the TAG results. Directed the Consultant to develop estimates for the items determined to be Most Important.

Questions & Comments To forward additional User Interface improvement ideas address:
