How to Make an Iced Caramel Macchiato Espresso Beverage Justin Bass December 08, 2009 ENGL 393 Section 401
Introduction These instructions are for making an espresso beverage called a caramel macchiato so that people who have their own espresso machines can make this drink without having to go to a coffee shop. People who enjoy espresso beverages will be the ones who use these instructions. Most of the time people drink espresso beverages in the morning when they just wake up or when they are trying to stay up and study for exams! A safety precaution for this is to not drink too much caffeine at once because it can cause adverse health effects. The equipment that you need to do this is espresso, an espresso press, milk, caramel sauce, ice, and vanilla coffee flavor syrup. For these instructions, we will assume we are making a 12oz drink.
Procedure 1)Line the bottom of a cup with the caramel sauce. 2)Pour about 1.5oz of vanilla flavor syrup into the cup.

3)Pour cold milk into the cup until it is filled about two thirds of the way to the top. Note: There needs to be enough room in the cup for the ice and the espresso shot. Adding Milk
4)Put cubes of ice into the drink until it is filled almost to the top, just with enough room for an espresso shot and caramel to be added. Note: You can vary the amount of milk you put into the cup in the previous step depending on how much ice you want. Adding Ice
5) Fill a standard shot glass (1.5oz) with espresso from your espresso press. Figure 3 Adding Espresso
Adding Toppings 6) At this point if you want, you can add whipped crème to the top of the drink. If you do this then on top of the whipped crème you will add the caramel sauce in a cross hatched pattern to the top of the whipped crème. If you don’t add whipped crème then just add the caramel to the top of the ice and espresso.

Special Note There are many variations of this drink, a popular one being the “upside down” caramel macchiato. This is simply when you put the espresso shots on the bottom instead of on the top so that the drink is mixed up.
Final Step 7) Insert a straw into the drink and enjoy the delicious caramel macchiato that you have created! It should like something like the figure on the right Figure 5
