1/6/2016 BACKGROUND ITSASGIS-5D 2

1/6/ BACKGROUND ITSASGIS-5D Data Management System Since 2000, an intense effort was conducted in AZTI’s Marine Research Division to set up a Data Management System to gather all the marine datasets that were being produced by different in-house research projects. AIMS:  Share data storage to find & distribute data  Homogenize formats & terminology  Facilitate interdisciplinary data analysis  & Generate customized Spatial Data Information mini-portals Time & Technology Time & Technology ≈ Corporative GIS ≈ Marine SDI + nD Data

1/6/ ITSASGIS-5D : Corporative GIS developed in 2000 SQL SERVER + SHP + FDGC Metadata (XML) Data Storage ARCGIS 8.1 Administration application Customized Thesaurus Customized ITSASGIS protocol Homogenenisation tools Data Search&Download Application Internet Data Viewer (mapserver)

1/6/ ITSASGIS-5D : Achievements & Limitations Biology & Fisheries Phytoplancton, Zooplancton, Icthioplancton, Benthos, Fish samples, Cetacean Sightings, Fisheries logbooks, habitat maps, etc Land Cartography Basic Topographic maps, Thematic maps, Aerial images, etc Uses & Management Administrative & regulatory ocean limits, Human activities maps, Water & sediment pollution samples, Impact & pressure maps, protected areas, etc… Geology & geomorphology Geomorphological maps & sediment samples. Bathymetries Regional, coastal and local bathymetries from different techniques (digitalized, single beam, multibeam). Hydrography & Oceanography Climatological maps,CTD, XBT…casts, data from buoys Meteorology Meteorological data from coastal stations & buoys.

1/6/2016 DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS ITSASGIS-5D ITSASGIS-5D has been developed primarily to: Provide access to spatial information produced & gathered in our institute. Integrate GIS data with nD data, avoiding parallel viewers. Allow us to easily create customized web viewers focused on specific user needs instead of viewers gathering lots of information. Make a development based on available open-source tools, and adopting international standards & conventions. 14

1/6/2016 FUTURE PLANS ITSASGIS-5D Upcoming release 1.0 and operational test phase to clear up bugs and improve performance. Development of modular data analysis functionalities. Link with metadata management system. Integrate new data sources (WFS, SOS, ¿?...) 15
