2 Measure no. 62 – Cycle Transport Improvements in Monza (1) Monza can be considered a climber cycling city About 22 km of cycling routes, some of which are still not interconnected Cycling in Monza represents 8.9% of the modal share, if we consider roads accessing the city centre Cyclists are increasing year by year: 8500 in in in 2010

3 Measure no. 62 – Cycle Transport Improvements in Monza (1) In RTD stage of the measure, a bike plan for the city of Monza and a project for a bike sharing scheme have been developed The bike plan has been approved by the City Government, together with constructing criteria for cycling routes Cycling in Monza represents 8.9% of the modal share, if we consider roads accessing the city centre Cyclists are increasing year by year

8 Measure no. 62 – Cycle Transport Improvements in Monza (6) BICYCLE CENSUS IN 2009: Survey on a sample of 298 people MODAL SPLIT 62% of interviewed people use always/ often the bicycle, mostly to keep fit, to respect environment and to save money 33% use it rarely mostly because of traffic, few cycling routes and long journey time Journeys last less than15 minutes (34%) or between 16 and 30 minutes (32%) Cycling improvements might lead to an increase in cycling

9 Measure no. 62 – Cycle Transport Improvements in Monza (7) SOCIETY AWARENESS- TRANSPORT SAFETY Useful measures to implement cycling: More and better connected cycling routes Safer crossroads Guarded parking's Bike rentals Accessible railway and bus stations Cycling association “Monzainbici” is known only by 44% of surveyed people

11 Measure no. 62 – Cycle Transport Improvements in Monza (9) PROCESS EVALUATION DRIVERS Involvement of citizens and cyclists’ associations New conceptual approach towards soft modes, reducing the need for private car use BARRIERS Lack of connections between cycling routes and insufficient space in the narrow streets of Monza. Insufficient involvement or awareness of policy key stakeholders Unavailability of funds to implement bike sharing system Difficult relationships with railways management
