Use of the Xsens 3D Motion Capture Technology for Horse Rider Postural Analysis Elizabeth A. Gandy MSc MBCS Department of Computing, Engineering & Technology

Background An asymmetrical posture can have a significant effect on balance and stability. This impedes performance and increases injury risk to both horse and rider. Research aimed to investigate whether inertial sensing technology is a practical tool for identifying and measuring rider asymmetry.

Method 12 horse/rider combinations fitted with the XsensTM MVN motion capture suit. Data captured for straight runway and 15m circle, in rising trot on each rein. Data exported and converted to CSV using customised C# software. Data analysed for 2 stride cycles (straight line) and 10 stride cycles (circles). Statistical analysis using the RTM statistical package.

XsensTM Motion Analysis Video Samples https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1RGsQnvMk0&feature=youtu.be

Results Asymmetry shown in external hip rotation of all riders. Values ranged from 1-27 degrees in a straight line and from 0-30 degrees on a circle. 83% showed greater external rotation of the right hip. Good intra-rater repeatability. Wireless range reliable within a 20 x 40m arena. Suit enabled quick changeover between riders.

Asymmetric rider comparison between left and right rein. Variations in external hip rotation asymmetry across all riders, comparing left rein circles with right rein circles.

Conclusions Study represents novel use of inertial sensing technology in its application to the measurement of rider motion patterns. Benefits of XsensTM Motion Capture Technology: Non-invasive and capable of recording rider hip rotation asymmetry whilst performing a range of movements unhindered. Goes beyond conventional optical motion analysis by providing the means of assessing the rider with greater accuracy. Efficient and practical, with potential to further advance analysis of horse and rider interactions.
