Meeting the Needs of All Learners (while still having a wife & life!) Staff Meeting Presentation – February 11, 2010

How do I meet the needs of all learners when student needs and talents vary so greatly?

Today’s Reality As An Educator: Today’s Reality As An Educator: Out task is to provide an education for the kinds of kids we have. Not the kinds of kids we used to have. Or want to have. Or the kids that exist in our dreams.

Reality In The Classroom: What does it LOOK, SOUND, and FEEL like? LOOK, SOUND, and FEEL LOOK, SOUND, and FEEL …………….. It’s a little like herding WILDCATS!

A Burning Question? D I F F E R E N T I A T E!

Mapping a Route Toward Differentiated Instruction “Even though students may learn in many ways, the essential skills and content they learn can remain steady. Students can take different roads to the same destination.” -Carol Ann Tomlinson

The Key The Key to a differentiated classroom is that all students are regularly offered CHOICES and students are matched with tasks compatible with their individual learner profiles. Curriculum should be differentiated in three areas: 1. Content: Multiple options for taking in information 2. Process: Multiple options for making sense of the ideas 3. Product: Multiple options for expressing what they know

Are they Ready? Are they Ready?

Are we ready? ► What do you know about differentiation? ► What do you wonder about/need to know? ► What might you be able to share/ model/demonstrate in your practice?
