Presentation transcript:

Today’s objectives…  Identify and discuss the two main parts of the nervous system.  Explain how the nervous system functions as the central control system of the body.  Identify factors that may lead to disorders of the nervous system. The Nervous System

The Body’s Control Center The nervous system carries messages to and from the brain. It controls senses, thoughts, movements and bodily functions.

 The cells that make up the nervous system.  Send and receive information in the form of electrical charges.  There are 3 types of neurons  Sensory, Interneurons and Motor Neurons

Nervous System Parts Central Nervous System or CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord.  Brain is the command center- controls most body functions.  Just the Brain Facts! Just the Brain Facts!  Spinal Cord is a long bundle of neurons that relays messages. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)  Nerves that connect CNS to all parts of the body.

The Nervous System Parts Continued…

Problems of the Nervous System InjuriesDisordersInfections Drug Abuse Alcohol Use How can we protect our nervous system? A spinal cord injury occurs every 49 seconds in the US.

Abuse of alcohol and drugs can cause permanent damage to your nervous system. How could your life be affected if you suffered permanent damage to the system that controls your thought processes, your movement, your heartbeat and your digestion? Give three specific reasons to support your answer.

The following slides contain a series of optical illusions that will attempt to trick or stump your senses! Follow the directions Miss Allison gives you to get the FULL effect! The Nervous System and it’s tricks
