HOW TO WRITE A PROPER HYPOTHESIS START HERE

THE OPTICAL ILLUSIONS TEST NOT LONG AGO, MR. SMITH, MRS. PETERS, AND I WERE DISCUSSING SCIENCE TOGETHER. MR. SMITH WAS TALKING ABOUT THESE COOL OPTICAL ILLUSIONS HE WAS LOOKING AT ONLINE. HE SHOWED THEM TO US. WE NOTICED SOMETHING INTERESTING WHEN WE LOOKED AT THEM. MR. SMITH SAW SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN MRS. PETERS AND I. WE STARTED TO WONDER, DO BOYS PERCEIVE OPTICAL ILLUSIONS DIFFERENTLY THAN GIRLS? WE THOUGHT WE MIGHT USE THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO TEST OUT OUR IDEA. IF WE HAD ALL OF OUR STUDENTS PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT, WOULD WE NOTICE A PATTERN? In your groups of 4, try to determine what the cause & effect would be for our experiment.

THE OPTICAL ILLUSIONS TEST CAN YOU SET UP OUR LAB?  IDENTIFY THE CAUSE & EFFECT  WRITE A TESTABLE QUESTION  IDENTIFY THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE  IDENTIFY THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE  WHAT ARE SOME THING THAT MUST STAY CONSTANT IN THIS EXPERIMENT?  FILL IN YOUR LAB REPORT AFTER YOUR WHITE BOARD ANSWERS ARE CHECKED  STEP 1 OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IS NOW COMPLETE!

RESEARCH…A NECESSARY STEP! WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OUTCOME OF OUR EXPERIMENT WILL BE? IS THIS YOUR STUDENTIPEDIA ANSWER OR DO YOU HAVE SOME ACTUAL FACTS TO BACK THAT UP?

RESEARCH…A NECESSARY STEP! YOUR HYPOTHESIS IS YOUR EDUCATED GUESS (YOUR CLAIM), PREDICTING WHAT YOU THINK THE OUTCOME OF THE EXPERIMENT WILL BE. HOW CAN YOU MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS OR A GOOD CLAIM, IF YOU HAVE NO INFORMATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS?

RESEARCH…A NECESSARY STEP! WHAT ARE OPTICAL ILLUSIONS? DO MEN & WOMEN PERCEIVE DIFFERENTLY?SQ3R CODES GET THE SQ3R CODE READER APP FOR YOUR PHONE FREE! GO TO THE APP STORE AND FIND THE ONE THAT SAYS QR READER You only have 45 seconds on each site to extract information…so be sure you are using your time wisely!

WHAT MIGHT OUR CLAIM BE BASED ON OUR RESEARCH? CAN WE BACK UP OUR CLAIM?

SO HOW EXACTLY DO WE WRITE OUR HYPOTHESIS (OR CLAIM)? A HYPOTHESIS IS AN EDUCATED GUESS ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN YOUR EXPERIMENT IT CONTAINS A CAUSE & EFFECT RELATIONSHIP Every hypothesis should follow this format: If ______________, then ___________ because _______________. (a quick summary of what you are testing) (what you think will happen) (why you think this) (If I do this…) (… then I think this will happen…) (…because …) cause effect research Give it a try on your whiteboards in your groups of 4!

HOW DO WE WRITE A STRONG HYPOTHESIS? Every hypothesis should follow this format: If ______________, then ___________ because _______________. (a quick summary of what you are testing) (what you think will happen) (why you think this) (If I do this…) (… then I think this will happen…) (…because …) cause effect research A good hypothesis is clear and complete. A well written hypothesis contains 3 things: 1. Testable: It must be based on a testable question 2. It should have 2 Variables (cause & effect) 3. Two very clear Verbs (one in the cause & one in the effect) Does your hypothesis have the proper TVs?

SETTING UP THE LAB: MATERIALS LIST: A CLASS OF BOYS AND GIRLS OPTICAL ILLUSIONS TIMER PROCEDURES: 1. GO TO THE STATION YOU ARE ASSIGNED 2. STARE AT THE IMAGE FOR 30 SECONDS {NO TALKING) 3. WRITE DOWN THE FIRST THING YOU SEE 4. RECORD YOUR DATA 5. MOVE TO THE NEXT STATION 6. REPEAT # 1-5

BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS, WHAT SHOULD OUR CONCLUSION BE? (INFERENCE) IS OUR HYPOTHESIS SUPPORTED OR NOT SUPPORTED?
