 Once we know WHAT needs to be done, we need to set priorities for tasks  Set priorities based on:  Urgency (e.g., due date – tomorrow?!)  Importance (e.g., a 40% vs. a 10% test)

High %, due very soon, “needs to be done” Low %, due far into future, “may be done” LOW HIGH

n 80/20 Rule: ◦ In any list of tasks, 80% of the importance lies in 20% of the list

Buy new cell phone. Write an eight page essay for English. Prepare for an AP Biology quiz. Dust the books on the bookcase. Review for midterm test that counts for 50% of grade. Schedule an appointment with Future Center Advisor. Complete a journal entry. a friend from an other high school. Shop for a new pair of athletic shoes. “Armor-al” the dashboard of my brother’s car.

“A” LIST Midterm test that counts for 50% of grade. Write an eight page essay for English. Prepare for a quiz in AP Biology. Schedule an appointment with Future Center Advisor. “B” LIST Complete a journal entry. Buy laundry detergent. Dust the books on the bookcase. a high school friend on another campus. n Once we know WHAT our priorities are, we need to estimate the amount of time for the tasks we’ve chosen to do n Why? ◦ So we can plan WHEN we do the tasks

n Rule of Thumb: 1.For every 1 hour in class you should be spending 2-3 hours studying/working n12 hrs class hours study/work

n TIP: Break large tasks into many smaller (more manageable) ones

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

MONDAYDone? Review Bio notes (30 min) Do Math problems (1.5 hrs) Do some research for Eng essay (1 hr) Study for Math quiz (30 min) Do laundry Call Mom Coffee with John

1. I should only do personal tasks after all school work is done. 2. I should be using my student planner to manage my time. 3. If I am taking 6 credits, I should study for hours each week. 4. A 20% test takes higher priority than a 10% test, and I should study throughout the term, not just before it. adapted from Conestoga College
