Fan Safety: Weather Angry Sky and Quite Boards Matthew Cox

Fan Safety The National Weather Service estimates that one out of every 10,000 Americans will be struck by lightning at some time in their lives. one out of every 10,000 Americans If lightning were to strike a fan, the consequences could be disastrous. All those struck by lightning are injured in some degree, with 10% of those injuries being fatal. (National Weather Service, 2012)

NCAA Stadium Evacuation Norte Dame Stadium – “Usher 800 to report to the command center” The Big House – “Doppler radar updates” – The rules state that the home team designates a particular person as the “lightning spotter”. When less than 30 seconds is observed between a flash of lightning and the audible sound of thunder play on the field should be stopped and evacuation procedures initiated. A “lightning clock” is then started. At least 30 minutes has to pass without further lightning alerts before steps can be taken to resume play. Each time there is a new strike the clock must be re-started. (NCAA, 2013) (Brennan, 2011)

Potential Disasters People will ignore warnings and not take appropriate action if they do not personally perceive danger

Issues Traffic? Where do people go?

Missed Opportunity Denver displayed the same message for 33 minutes Pro’s and Con’s

Discussion Should stadium officials have more or less concern for fan safety concerning weather? Do you think the Broncos Organization and the League missed an opportunity by showing same message? As a future sport professional, what will you do to ensure fan safety concerning weather?

Smart or an overreaction? More effective refuge in interior stadium causeway or walking to parking lot during storm
