What is Satire? Satire: A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of various techniques  Uses humor to expose and ridicule human vice and folly  Satire is meant to inspire reform or change one’s opinion about a subject/topic  Who is the best satirist from the period to The Enlightenment? Satirical Techniques:  Exaggeration: To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen  Incongruity: To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings  Irony: Contrast between reality and appearance.  The outcome is the opposite of what is expected to happen  Saying one thing, but the meaning is the opposite (i.e. sarcasm)  Parody-To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place or thing Handout!
