 Letters are used to communicate with people outside of your organization  They are more formal and more reliable than  They are more permanent than telephone conversations

 Date  Inside Address  Salutation  Body  Complementary Close  Signature Line  Reference Initials Spell Out in Full !! Address of the person you are writing to. Dear ___________ The letter itself Sincerely Your Signature YOUR initials as the person who typed the letter

 Everything is aligned on the left side  There are NO INDENTS !

 Margins are all set at 1” UNLESS you are printing on letterhead; then extra spacing must be allowed for the letterhead text/images  Punctuation can be open or closed  Open has no punctuation after the salutation and close  Closed has a colon “:” after the salutation and a comma “,” after the close

1. Open Word 2. Change all margins to 1” 3. Enter down 6 times = 2” top margin 4. Type the dateline 5. Continue typing the letter in proper format following the proper spacing rules
