Heidelberg Catechism #126 Q. What is the fifth petition? A. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Does the Lord’s Prayer apply to Christians? “It was quite proper in the old dispensation to seek forgiveness and to ask for the remission of sins. For in those days the people of God still lived in the shadows, and sin offerings had to be repeatedly presented in the temple. The prayer for the forgiveness of sins at that time meant the expression of earnest longing for Him that was to come and that would blot out their sins forever.

Does the Lord’s Prayer apply to Christians? Now, however, Christ has come, and He has finished all. In the old dispensation “every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.” (Heb. 10:11) But now Christ is come. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever those that are sanctified.” And therefore, … in the new dispensation we can no longer pray for the forgiveness of sins: for our sins are forever blotted out.”
