Our district Carini is situated on the west coast of Sicily, really close to the main city Palermo It’s an art city full of ancient historical sites witness of rich past and traditions The population, around 33,000, has quickly increased due to a fast migration of people coming from Palermo and to a tourist summer strong presence Local economy is based more on services and industries than primary sectors, although local industrila sector is suffering from economical crisis with severe consequences on employment and people’s life style Local society is going through different changes as the old village traditions and values of the original inhabitants are being substituted by new typical city issues with all the worse implications carried as an increasing sense of individualism and wish for material assets Moreover the school lies within one of the newest districts in Carini, a disadvataged area for social-economic aspects. It was built around the area P.E.E.P. in which the popular buildings and the residential one merges creating a heterogeneous social and economical reality. The area P.E.E.P., born in order to satisfy the need of the local population, was assigned to the several inhabitants coming from the outskirts of Palermo. Buildings, houses one next to another and well-kept villas are surrounded by green but dirty and abandoned spaces. In the district there is a multi-sports municipal structure shared with the school. The inhabitants of the district are mostly workers of the industry area, of the public administration and professional men. The unemployment level is not so high even if in this district many poor families live. One of the worst facts of the district is the vandalism.

Becoming reference of the District Improving the level of education Lowering the number of school abandon Promoting students’ worth and through them urging in the adults the sense of beauty Our school aims at

The sense of beauty in the educational organization of the School As one of the biggest problems in the social context Laura Lanza school lies in, is the lack of respect towards the surroundings people live in and an increasing amount of acts of vandalism towards whatever is a public open space,in order to increase the awareness of the environment surrounding our students and to Promote the respect towards what is outside of them and in particular the place they live in, Our school is proposing a new educational philosophy : the sense of beauty. IT means the consciousness by the students that it is important and essential to a better way of life to stay and live and study in a beautiful place surrounded by beautiful objects. In this view, each year the students are involved during the first fifteen days of school in an absolutely free and personally oriented activity in which they,as a whole community, decide in each class how to create a beautiful and picturesque room of their own in which they will spend their school time. So with the help of their teachers they, provided of paint and brushes, bought by themselves, decorate the walls, the doors, the cabinets of their classrooms, the cooridor walls and theschool entrances. In this way they understand the importance of respecting the room they created, even though it is not their own homeroom, and since this occasion, they can learn to respect and to embellish the world outside where they live. Moreover they are as the main actors in the school style, they realize how they live in the school and how they are part of it. This contributes to promote good manners and attitudes in their behaviour in the perspective to become the future citizens of a better and more beautiful world.
