CONSERVATION WARM-UP ACTIVITY 10/8/15 Write 3 things you think about when you see or hear the word CONSERVATION

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER Matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. In a chemical reaction, there are the same numbers and types of atoms before and after the reaction.

LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER EX: Formation of Water The chemical reaction is written in an equation that looks like this: 2 𝐻 2 + 𝑂 2  2 𝐻 2 O The items on the left side of the arrow are called reactants and the items on the right side of the arrow are called products.

CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS Check the numbers and types of atoms on each side of the arrow. Reactants Product 2 Hydrogen molecules Two molecules of water (each molecule has two (each molecule has two Hydrogen) = total of 4 hydrogen and one oxygen) + for a total of 4 hydrogen and One oxygen molecule 2 oxygen (each molecule has two Oxygen) = total of 2
