Solving Equations Using more than one step!!! Simplify one or both sides of the equation! Use inverse operations to get variable alone! Remember:

What is our “Goal”??? We want the variable by itself!! a.k.a “get x by itself”

Solve this equation: Step 3: x=23 ½ 2x-15=32 Step 1: 2x-15+15= x=47 Step 2:

Try this one!! 5x+3(x+4)=28 (hint: Simplify the left hand side of the equation) 5x+3x+12=28 (Collect like terms) 8x+12= (sub.12 from each side) 8x=16(Divide by 8) x=2

Is there something wrong? 2(x-3) = 5 2x-3 = 5 2x = 8 x = 4 The 2 was not distributed properly in the first step. The second step should be 2x-6 = 5

Is there something wrong? 5-3x = 10 2x = 10 x = 5 5-3x = 10 -3x = 5 (minus 5 from both sides) x= -5/3 (divide by -3)

What’s my age? Jeff is 4 years younger than twice his son’s age. The sum of their ages is 74. How old is the son? Let s=son’s age the dad’s age can be represented by: 2s-4 Equation: s+(2s-4)=74

Son’s age continued… Here was our equation: s+(2s-4)=74 (Combine terms on left side) 3s-4 = 74 Add 4 to both sides 3s=74 Divide by 3 S=18What does that mean?

Final answer? If s=26, that means the son is 26 years old. The problem is asking for the father’s age. 2(26)-4 is the father’s age The father is 48 years old.
