Evaluation Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our products challenges other real media conventions by having a poster and magazine cover to advertise the product. This advertising style has been done with almost every dystopian film made professionally. For example I am Legend uses a poster to show the setting location and the actors involved in the film. The setting in the background of the poster is very run down and remote. A famous land mark of a bridge is shown with half of it missing. The suggests no escape and separation from the rest of the world/human race. This is further supported by the main character accompanied by a dog. This plays with the element of dog being mans best friend. The sky and colour tone of the overall image is dark and gloomy. This further overstates the dystopian feel.

Film Magazine With our own film magazine we also used a run down desolated setting for background. This was to suggest a dystopian theme. We had a female heron to challenge the typical postmodern cowboy main character. This gives the film a postmodern element to it. We used red fonts for the tittles. This suggests danger to the viewer which is appropriate as our film is a dystopian film about possessed people. However, red also suggests love and romance which is also suitable for our film as the story plot revolves around two characters falling in love. Above the main header we have written Exclusive Independent Issue. We used an exclamation mark after the word exclusive. This exaggerates the fact that this is a rare and once in a life time movie and is not to be missed. We highlighted Independent in yellow. This was to inform the viewer that this is not any Hollywood block buster movie, but is alternative and in the eyes of some of our target audience this will be considered to be cool and unique.

Film Poster The Poster is similar to our magazine cover. The poster has a rhetorical question, “will they survive?” This uses the typical dystopian horror styled film element, as this is what the story plot generally revolves around the main character/characters in a struggle to survive. In the top left and right corner of the poster, the two main actors names are shown. This instantly lets the viewer know who is in the film and by knowing this, they will know weather it’s a small independently made film or a Hollywood blockbuster. We used quotes and ratings from news paper companies and magazines. This proves our film is legit and is successful. We showed a four star rating with the quote “the first of it’s kind”. This suggests the film is very well done and possibly postmodern. At the bottom of the poster we included all the people who played a main role in the production of the film. This way if somebody wants to find out more about the film, they can research the people included and see their previous work to give them an idea what to expect.

Film trailer Our product is a hybrid genre of horror and romance. The film is dystopian due to the film disruption being a “possessed plague” and is about the two main characters struggling to survive while falling in love at the same time.

Sound Tracks We used the soundtrack from a old love song at the beginning and end of the trailer. This foreshadows the story plot and also gives the trailer a romantic but edgy impression. We used an upbeat dance/drum and bass track at a scene where the characters were in danger. This exaggerates them running away and will keep the viewer intrigued and on their toes.

Sound and Editing effects We sampled an explosion sound effect from a free website. We used this effect to make our trailer seem professionally presented and make sure the viewer knows what's happening. We used static screen frames to break up scenes, and convey confusion and panic to the viewers. This has been done by another dystopian film trailer, Branded - JzX15UEkM This gives the idea to the audience that something is wrong.

Titles During the trailer we uses titles to sell and advertise the film to the audience. We did this by having “Best newcomer nomination at canes film festival”, during one of the scenes. This will hopefully boost the viewers expectations from the film and will be more likely to watch it. We also used tittles to give away some of the plot to the viewer so to “pull them in” but not to give too much away so they are still interested and want to watch the rest of the film. This is done in many horror/dystopian trailers, mainly to explain the disruption or cause for the dystopia. This is done with Districts 9’s trailer However they hint at the plot in a more discreet manner as to leave more for the viewer to figure out them selves. This will result in the same out come with the viewer wanting to know more.

Conventions We used a typical convention of a dystopian/horror trailers by using titles to narrate certain scenes. “It was a normal day…” was presented by the start of the trailer. This will set the viewer “on edge” and suggest something is going to go wrong. The film genre is dystopian/romance which has been used by many other films such as IRobot. We had a female protagonist. This challenges the typical dystopian styled protagonist as they are mainly male. It also uses the typical media conventions as a scene contains a bloody hand is dragged across a wall.
