WELCOME! Guidance Grade 10

Presentation What is University Guidance? Course Selections Impact of Grade 11 Marks CAS – Introduction University Guidance Career Day Reminder

What is University Guidance? The process of helping students to understand themselves and facilitate the process of choosing and selecting a university by providing information and having one on one meetings.

Our Goals at TMS We are very confident in our students and we know that they will get into university. It is important to us that we build their curiosity, self-knowledge and confidence of students, so they are happy and successful, for university and beyond. TMS builds the foundation for this through the Montessori Program, IB and 4 pillars. Our guidance program facilitates this process by knowing each child well and helping them know themselves well. We help them make their life plans, which includes a university education.

Course Selections Course Selection Sheet – Handout These choices have an impact on university admissions. Students must take the correct courses in grade 11 and 12 to ensure that they meet university requirements. There is a section on the back to fill out regarding future areas of study. No pressure here! Just general – there are not a lot of courses that universities are looking for. Follow student interests and strengths. Examples - engineering, medical science, business or arts.

General University Prerequisites Engineering -2 sciences (Chemistry and Physics) -2 maths (SL math, not math studies) Biological Sciences -2 sciences (Biology, Chemistry), some recommend Physics (*could be in the summer) Business -2 maths (SL math, not math studies) -Maybe one science Arts -specific to the art that will be studied -portfolio required, specific work done and grade 12 courses completed *summer school science– marked in OUAC as summer school, depends on student if this is a good choice HL/SL designation – sometimes has an impact on entrance and for advance credit **Please check einfo or specific university websites for exact admission information.

Marks and Grading Grade 11 marks do matter! Grade 11 marks are sent in, but they are not used in the final grade average. Ontario- top 6 grade 12 courses (U/M level), includes prerequisites UK/US – whole transcript is sent in, varied approaches to calculating GPA IB marks are calculated, factors taken into consideration to transfer grades to Ontario levels – converted into Ontario grades. Grades sent in to OUAC in January of Grade 12 year.

CAS Creativity, Action and Service CAS guide Starts at the beginning of grade 11 Last for 18 months, with a long term service project. Must meet the 8 outcomes. Logged through reflection and evidence of learning, rather than counting hours. (In ManageBac) Introduction done at Camp, plus students will attend the CAS fair.

CAS Creativity, Action and Service Combination of activities that are creative, action and have a service component. Example – student may have a long term service project in the school writing a newspaper, that also raises an awareness about a global issue and collects funds for that organization. (Combination of action and service, and is over a long period of time). May also join athletic teams. By the CAS fair, all activities add up to satisfy the 8 outcomes.

Careers Day Thursday, March 10 Students required to find a presenter and have them come in to present. Great connection to CAS.

Assistance and Questions We encourage you to drop by, or phone us anytime for any concerns that you may have. Please make an appointment or call regarding course selections. If everything is okay, you can sign the course selection form.
