Do Now: Given what you know about the events in Vietnam up to this point, would you send in ground troops? Consider: - What happened in Korea- American foreign policy - Results of Pacification- What will happen if ground troops are sent

Johnson has a decision to make  At this point, America already has troops in Vietnam and Operation Rolling Thunder is in effect.  But many ask the question: is this going to be enough?  Many advisors remind Johnson of American’s foreign policy:  Containment and the prevention of the domino effect.  But Johnson’s re-election campaign in 1964 stressed he was not interested in sending in ground troops.  This was important to the American public and he was re-elected.  But the Vietcong are strong and posing a serious threat to the security of South Vietnam.  So what should Johnson do?

Activity  Individually you will analyze 3 primary source documents from some familiar people.  You need to go through the readings and figure out whether they are for or against sending in more troops to Vietnam. This involves underlining/highlighting the text.  When you are done, you must complete the paragraph response. YOU MUST REFERENCE THE SOURCES.  This should be at minimum 7 sentences in length.

Moving Toward Conflict 2 SWBAT: identify the reasons Johnson gave for sending in ground troops into Vietnam. Homework: Study for vocab quiz tomorrow. Do Now: What would you have done if you were President Johnson? What sources did you find the most compelling?
