 Copy this: The human condition is defined as "the characteristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict, and mortality.”human Warm Up 11/24

  To build an outline for my Hamlet essay. Learning Targets

 Moving Away from the 5 Paragraph Format: ----> A good piece of writing takes its reader on a "journey."

  Chronological (time)  Spatial order (location)  Causal order (organized by how things work)  Simple to complex  Narrow to wider implications  Obvious to surprising Ways to Organize your Body Paragraphs

  Based on the work you did yesterday with the graphic organizer, choose your thesis idea (it should be at the bottom of your paper from yesterday).  Choose a structure that works best for the essay that you want to write. Incorporating Thesis

 FOUR or FIVE Body Paragraphs  You have notes on quotations from each act of the play (see my blog for access to student-selected quotations from Acts III and V).  If you are going to organize your essay CHRONOLOGICALLY, you must include FIVE body paragraphs, with one quotation from each act.  If you are using any other format, you must include AT LEAST FOUR body paragraphs (with quotations from anywhere in the play).

OUTLINE FORMAT I.Introduction (label which organization format you chose) – a)Write out a rough idea that you might want to use based on one of these strategies:  make a connection to the readers  appeal to them  anticipate their needs  orient them in the direction of the "journey” b)your main focus within your topic II.Body Paragraphs (do this for each of the four/five) – a)Topic idea b)Context c)Quotation d)Commentary: Pull out discrete words, phrases, etc. which illustrate the conclusion you’ve drawn. Then, connect the dots for the reader and prove your assertion/conclusion valid. III.Conclusion – a)Write out a rough idea that you may use based on one of these strategies:  mark the destination of the journey  provide a reflection  Close your idea, but make sure this paragraph is still "meaty"

 Homework  You will not have more time to work on this in class. In order to get full credit for this assignment, submit both the essay AND the outline by Friday, 12/4.
