LMC 27 November 2013 Status of LBDS LS1 activities and plans for 2014 reliability run Jan Uythoven for the many, many people working on the mentioned equipment

New TCDQ absorber Protects the machine in case of asynchronous dump Upgraded version robust to 2.5× ns The cross section of the upgraded TCDQ is identical to the present system. The graphite absorber is being replaced by a sandwich of graphite and carbon reinforced carbon fibre (CfC) New VMTAB bellows to allow large movement (TE/VSC)  Production started 2 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 Old sandwich vs. new sandwich M. Atanasov, J. Borburgh

New TCDQ and related All 6 tanks are installed and aligned Modification of measurement tables ongoing (01/2014) Spare tank will be finished by the end of 2014 Related to asynch dump protection  The new TCDQ position will be interlocked by the BETS (N.Voumard)  New BPMS electronics (T. Lefevre, C. Boccard)  Installation of TCSGP – jaw BPMs (S.Redaelli & project) 3 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013

Abort Gap Cleaning Automatic procedures of the BSRA to make the system more reliable  To be launched automatically by sequencer or ‘internal timer’ when in physics Aim is to automatically start the abort gap cleaning or dump the beam, without intervention of the operator Re-assessed quench levels of Q4 and Q5 with new TCDQ Improvements cleaning by the ADT  New cables and hardware  New cleaning algorithms being studied 4 LMC, 27/11/2013 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans See MPP 25/10/2013 S. Mazzoni, E.Bravin, S.Bart-Pederson W. Hofle, D.Valuch, E. Gianfelice-Wendt

Direct link BIS – LBDS re-triggering False Asynchronous beam dumps  Specified: 2 in 10 years  Calculated: in 10 years False Synchronous beam dumps  Specified: 2 per year  Calculated: per year Status  Ordering components  VHDL test bench ‘now’  Series of 5 boards to be launched December  Install machine March Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 V. Vatansver S. Gabourin

Dilution kickers MKB Installation of the nominal system (staged to spread costs) Add two MKB magnets per beam = 1 tank: 4 H + 6 V magnets 7 LMC, 27/11/2013 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans V.Senaj, L.Ducimetière

Extraction kicker MKD - Generator During LS1 operational energy was limited to 5 TeV Installation of HV insulators between GTO switches HV deflectors and return current rods 8 LMC, 27/11/2013 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans V.Senaj, L.Ducimetière

Add shielding to MKD & MKB cable ducts Additional shielding between UA and RA for MKD and MKB systems 9 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 V.Senaj

Extraction kicker MKD Power Trigger Unit Increase PTU maximum voltage from 3 kV to 4 kV (replacement of HVPS) Replace 1.2 kV IGBT with equivalent 1.7 kV type => better resistance to SEB Operate PTU at ~3500 V constant voltage, => Increase GTO gate current => Increase GTO lifetime => Reduce kicker rise time => Stabilise pulse delay over energy range 10 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 V.Senaj, M. Stjepic, E.Carlier

LBDS Controls Upgrade of Trigger Synchronisation Units cards (TSU) Distribute TSU over three different crates Motivation  External review of TSU v2 cards (2010)  Internal review of LBDS Powering (2012)  VME crate +12V problem (2012)  CIBU powering filters problems (2011)  Improvement of surveillance & diagnosis 11 LMC, 27/11/2013 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans A. Patsouli, A. Antoine, N. Voumard

LBDS Powering Modifications Third UPS (backup) added everywhere Added a separated connection to a second UPS (US65) for LBDS Individual circuit breaker for each crate PSU Software monitoring of crate redundant PSU The aim is to improve safety 12 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 Tests to take place at end of AUG tests Prefer to test before starting run with local BIS loop -> end of May Test option with F3 and F4 off simultaneously V.Chareyre, H.Thiesen, I.Romera, M.Zerlauth E.Carlier, N.Magnin, A.Antoine Split in three crates

MKB Vacuum Number of ‘false beam dumps’ due to LBDS in 2010 – 2012 Too many dumps triggered by MKB vacuum, without having a real vacuum problem Problems with noisy vacuum signals 13 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013

MKB Vacuum MKB vacuum gauges being replaced Problems with regular vacuum spikes (every 7 / 9 minutes) being investigated in detail  Installation of test gauge outside beam vacuum  Effect not visible outside the vacuum chamber  Seems to be real and not a controls issue inside the chamber  Source to be identified at start-up ABT prefers to maintain present 2 oo 3 interlock logic per individual MKB tank 14 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013 Not only this device ! F. Antoniotti, JP. Boivin, P. Gomes

LBDS Reliability Runs Local Reliability Run  12 weeks, system in local  Test the voltage holding of generators and magnets, erratic switching (without radiation), switch surveillance, cooling, stability, energy scans Remote Reliability Run  6 weeks, system in Remote  Run sequencer for arming, local BIS loop and BETS-SIM  Including energy ramps etc.  Test new link between BIS – LBDS: get statistics  Test operational software and diagnostics, XPOC etc. Risks to be a moving target with developments of FESA3, CMW etc. Followed by regular running until first beams Tests with beam (2015)  Standard commissioning tests with beam  Effective rise time measurement of the MKD (never done)  Test dump with BLMDD (never done) 15 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013

Weekly testing. Remote End 2014 (OP)BIS loop closed, inject and dump under real machine conditions Remote Safety OK before summer Keep system working / software

Conclusions Many important changes to the LHC Beam Dumping System and related equipment  To allow for higher beam energies and intensities  To improve safety  To increase availability Extensive testing is required to guarantee safety  Reliability run in local, 12 weeks: generators and magnets  Reliability run in remote, 6 weeks: BIS-LBDS, TSU  To be finished before the summer holidays: back to bussiness  Tests with beam at start-up Running in remote involves many equipment groups and requires coordination by the OP group 17 Jan Uythoven, Status LBDS LS1 & plans LMC, 27/11/2013
